looking for a heavy hauler
 

ive been thinking about trying to find a 55-66 c40 or higher series truck. i was thinking about taking one and puting a 8v92 detroit in it. anybody ever done this? is it possible?

In my opinion, it is too big for a Medium Size truck. Not only do I believe you would have trouble fitting one in there, if even possible, those engines are very heavy and C-40 and C-50 front end specs would be too light for it. When available, GM only put 4-53's or V-6 Toro-Flow diesels in those trucks. Even C-70's and C-80's had nothing close to that big.

I admire your enthusiasm though.

You think a c60 would would hold up to a 6v92 at 2000lbs? I've found a 63 and a 66 c60 local and they both look good

A 6V-92 would have a better chance to fit, but there again I don't personally know of any in a Medium Size truck.

The wieght of the engine also needs to be factored in on how you plan to use the truck. If you were to make a Pick-up out of it and just haul light loads, it wouldn't be as much of a concern. But if you have that heavy engine along with a steel Rollback for example, then want to haul a heavy vehicle on it, you will be overweight in a hurry. ....just generalizing.

The truck in the E-Bay listing looks interesting.

Just to add a little more info and to give another example of bigger engines in trucks, some believe a 12V-71 won't fit into a GMC 9500 Long Nose truck. You would think that there would be plenty of room, but I have seen debates about it from pretty knowledge-able GMC guys.

i was thinking about building one with a 8v92 and either my enclosed gooseneck or my open. possibly both. i didnt relize that they weighed 3300lbs. i want one with alot of power is what i was looking at. the 6v92s dont have as much power and torque as the 8v92. so i was looking at it as the 8v92 would have alot more pulling power. what engine would you recomend?

I think I'm with C10-C90 Bill on this one, I have a 1979 model 289 Pete which is a 2 axle 359 with a silver 8v92 T in it. The front springs and frame are twice as heavy as my C60 or C80 trucks, I think you are looking at a 6v53 here. I'm afraid the DOT might look cross eyed at it also, just my opinion. Besides , a C60 drive shaft and rearend will never hold a 450 hp 92.

I like the '66 C-60 best in the Craigslist ads that you posted. A 4-53 would be more what GM put in there and a 6V-53 would be one step up. Still could be a challange to fit it in there though.

They put 6V-53's in some GMC 7500 Tandem Axel Dump Trucks, therefore it should pull your Gooseneck Trailer with no problem.

If I were to put a Detroit into a '66 C-60, I myself would be looking at a 4-53T.

To have a 6V-53 in a '66 C-60 sure would be unique, but an alternative would be to buy a truck with one already in it. They put a lot of them in '66 and up Chevy C-70's and GMC 7500's. I would also consider a Chevy C-90 or a GMC 9500 with a 6-71. You could also get a 6V-92 in a newer one.

can't put a number on that but 30 years ago I had a GMC that was about the size of a C60, it was a 62 or 63 year model. Had a 6v53 in it, had a fifth wheel on it, it was used to haul mining equipment to the mines around western colo and moab utah. Another truck I wish I had back. Any way, the 53 was the best size for that truck.

Hey Bill, did you know you could get a 353N in a 64 65 C50. I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't have all the factory sales brochures.

Right, I have the listings in some of my Chevy Truck Manuals. I also knew of a truck that had one in the neighborhood. This was back in the 70's. I had thought it was a 4-53, but it could have been a 3-53. Actually had a chance to buy it years later, but the timing wasn't right. That truck always sounded cool and you would hear it before you saw it!!

I don't remember what series that GMC was but it was close to C60 or C80 size and the 6v53 looked like factory, it looked like it belonged in there. I'll look through my brochures to see which ones show the spects and pics of the 353 sitting in the frame, I think it was C50 only.

the 80 series trucks were the one that came with the 6V53 in the 1960-66 trucks.

I checked my Chevy Truck Manual and it states that the 6V-53 was available in the E-80, U-80 and W-80 model trucks in '64 and '65.

E = Single Axel LCF
W = Tandem Axel LCF
U = Tilt Cab

I never saw or found any evidence of a 6V-53 in a "C" (Conventional Cab) truck, but y'all let me know if I'm wrong.

I also checked on the smaller Detroits.

It lists a 3-53 available in a D-50 and a 4-53 in a D-60

D = Conventional Cab w/Diesel Engine

Yep, everything in my 65 brochure backs up what you say, also if its a 353 it has one aircleaner, 453 has two aircleaners. My 1959 GMC 630 with 471 has two aircleaners.

At one point in time I had a 59 10400 series Chevy (wish I never got rid of that one!!) I had a 6-71 almost thrown in my lap for it. Wouldn't fit. But I feel sure that a 6v53 would fit well and a 6v71 would have a good chance. I thing a 6v53 or even a 4 cylinder (either a 4-53 or 4-71) would work well too.

if it where me i would go for a 6v53 mil spec 330hp and 800trq. or if it would fit just for the cool factur i 8v53t. 6v wiaghs areound 1600 8v53 is some where around 2200. a 453 is 140 hp and 450 trq
