66 Chevy Apache General Information Please HELP
 

:chevy: Just bought a 66 chevy apache and I need help with a few things to get me going on this forum!

VIN tag reads:

60153600801A

Engine block reads:

GB50617

Im new to the website and couldn't find a decoder for this year so your help would be greatly appreciated. Also a side note is the apache and upgrade of the c-10 or a downgrade? Or a whole different truck in general???

Welcome!!

Cool looking truck.

From the pictures of your truck, it looks like a past owner installed a '60 or '61 grille and hood on a '66. The Apache name was only used until 1961, and was replaced by the simple C-10/20/30 etc name .

Look in the FAQ thread toward the top of the page to find a ton of great info on these trucks. You should find all the info you could imagine, and then some!

Where did you find your vin? It didn't seem to match up with the decoding information I usually use. Did you find it on a small plate on the top inside lip above the door like this? Vin numbers usually are a mix of letters and numbers..

that is the exact spot where i wrote my vin from so I guess I could go to my ownership and see what it says there and hopefully its a correct VIN thanks!

Is there a possibility due to the fact I am a canadian and the truck has never been outside of canada the VIN codes could be different compared to the american decoders?

Check the link Here for Canadian VIN info. I looked at it before, but couldn't get the numbers to match up. The Canadian trucks did have some different features about them, but I'm not sure of all the details there. I'm sure you'll be able to get it figured out before long!

If possible a pic might help...
what I was able to decode ,using the canadin vin link, and taking some liberties , and looking at your pics, I think is this:
6 0 15 3 6 00801 A
6=1966

"0" is this a "C" ? It should be, to denote a conventional cab.

15= series (1/2 ton long wheelbase)

3= fleetside, should be "34", but with the other 2 options, "03"-cab chassis, and "04"-stepside, I am thinking that maybe they just left off stamping a 4 since this was the only 15 series model that started with a 3, not a 0?? just guessing. ( it helps that in your pic, it shows as a long fleet.....)

6= 6 cylinder.

00801= the five digit vin.

A=GVW class- 6000 and less.

hope this helps, also looks like your truck had a little restoration at some point...
I see a 61 front sheetmetal, and what looks to be a 65 steering wheel (65 were fawn, and a different wheel than the 66)
