turbo 400 id tag info

2 Attachment(s)
I need some help in decoding this id tag. I have done many searches and can't find any info on this type of tag numbers. All I have seen have 2 letter codes not 3 letters as this one has. By the pan style it is a TH400, but i would like to know the year and what it was used in.
TAG reads: (if you can't see the pic)
280
87 LCA 4134

The case bellhousing has "HD" & "39" embossed into the casting.

The tail is 9" with a 27spline shaft.

Any help would be great, thanks.

Re: turbo 400 id tag info

27 spline output in a 400 case usually dictates a T375, normally found in the 70s ish.....station wagons

Look at the bottom of the tail housing, is should say 375 in the casting

Motors Trans. repair lists it as: 1987 V8-305 R series 1/2 ton

Re: turbo 400 id tag info

Thanks 16N67, so is it a 400 or 375? It doesn't have 375 stamped in bottom of tail housing.

Thanks again for the info i couldn't find any list online that had that code listed.
only showed two letter codes not three.

Re: turbo 400 id tag info

GM used to call them a 375 in the 70's, now it seems they are called a 400 with a 350 spline tail shaft. They still made them into the late 80's. Three letter codes started in 87

Re: turbo 400 id tag info

OK great, so i guess the R series is a 2wd drive truck, correct?
Do you know of any place online that has the three letter codes listed.

I called a local drivetrain shop asking about a slip yoke for it and they told me the TH400 didn't have a 27 spline shaft. He kept insisting i had a th350. I told him i know what the pan looks like. But anyway will a slip yoke from a th350 work the same? Also i have a 9" tail housing what length yoke should i get, anything special?

thanks again:)

Re: turbo 400 id tag info

It should take a standard 350 slip with that tail housing

Re: turbo 400 id tag info

I have never found the numbers online. I have the Motors Domestic Transmission manuals that list the codes.
C & R series are the 2wd trucks
It takes a regular 350 yoke

Re: turbo 400 id tag info

My book says its a 375 from a 87-88 R series with a 305.
