Putting 81-87 fuel doors in a 78 short bed?
How hard would it be to take a 78 short fleetside bed with the round access fuel caps and put in the 81-87 square fuel doors. I am talking to a guy who has a nice 78 short bed for sale but I have an 85 and want to keep the square fuel doors. Do the 78 beds have the fuel caps in the same place as the newer beds. Thinking maybe cutting out the doors and putting them in the older bed. Any differences other than the fuel doors.

Well heading out the door to talk to the body shop about this to see what he thinks.

It's not that hard. Just cut out the piece you want. Mark it on the other bed. Cut that bed and weld it in. Grind , fill sand sand sand , prime , sand sand sand , seal then paint. Not hard, just a long process.

I just wanted to make sure that they were in the same place between the older and newer beds. I figured they were but wasn't sure. Thanks.

There will be more differances than you think... You will need to change at least the upper part of the hose also. Also depending what year parts truck you have, the hose size may be differant too.
My 2 cents... If you are dealling with nice rust free bed, its worth more that a 79-87 bed anyday. Maybe up to $1k differance. I would sell your bed and buy the right one. If your bed has been patched, no big loss and change the fillers as wanted... |
