3970010 Engine Suffix Help

I recently purchased a 67 Sb 2wd. The seller did not know which engine it had but suspected it was a 305 or 307. The Engine Casting number is 3970010 and the Suffix is V0199800(Front Passenger Side of engine). The Casting number is leading me to believe it's a 350. It's highly doubtful that its a 302 or 327. Can anyone tell me what the V0199800 number means? I checked a ton of online info and cant find that Suffix number. Thanks James

I believe it is also an over the counter crate engine. That's where the "800" suffix comes in.

Same block I have. Its a 350. I was told mine came from a chevelle/impala of the early 70's.

The 3970010 engine block casting number does not mean 350.

It could be a 327, 307 or 350, 2 or 4 bolt main from 1968 thru 1978.

All it can tell you for sure is that the block is a 4 inch bore.

However, if you are a betting man, you would most likely win guessing 350 because it is the most common casting number for a 350.

For the real ID, you need to decode the numbers stamped on the passenger side deck in the front.

I have the same problem. Mine is VO299800. I would love to know what this engine really is, warrenty replacement, dealer over the counter, etc.

ok...here is another link:

It's either a 69-80 350 or a 69 Z28 302 (you should be so lucky!)

If you go to the first link I posted you will find this quote:

"My point here I guess is... trying to decode "3970010" is almost pointless. It's a 350. If you're trying to buy a 350 and you see this thing laying on the ground, then there it is."

This is from Mad Mike Maciolek, one of this country's foremost experts on small block Chevys.

Thx for all the input. I guess ill assume V0199800 is truly a 350 for now until later when I do some engine work on it. I plan on getting it running good for the summer and actually enjoying it before a major teardown!
