Idle problem....

Truck started acting funny today...You can rev it up and immediately take your foot off the accelerator, and the rpms slowly go back down to normal idle.....By slowly, I mean really slow..lol.....4.8 with around 126k miles...I took the air intake off and looked in the TB thinking there was some carbon build up, but it's nice and clean...Have had a minor rough idle for a while, but just barely noticeable...Bad IAC or TPS..?..Could a vacuum leak cause this as well..??..Thanks in advance for any help.....:chevy:

Re: Idle problem....

It could be a vacuum leak. Have you checked your MAF?

Yes, I forgot to type that as well...It was cleaned a while back.....Thinking I might have an intake manifold gasket problem..I'll have to test that out tomorrow....Thanks for the input....

Mine has done the same thing for awhile i think its got something to do with the mass air sensor, but not sure after mine runs for 5 min its usually ok. 99 and 170000 mi

Re: Idle problem....

Took some throttle body cleaner, and sprayed around the base of my intake...Did great until the passengers side...Motor started to stumble as soon as I sprayed the cleaner around the base about half way back...Looks like I'll be getting some new intake gaskets put on. Going to have them check out the knock sensors as well since the intake will be off...Been saving up money for LTs and a cam, but looks like that will have to wait for a while........:cuss:...

Re: Idle problem....

Could be worse I guess...lol......A friend of mine was going to hook me up with a LS1 Hot Cam and the yellow LS6 springs....The specs were 219/228 .525 with 112LSA if I remember correctly...(I'll have to double check)...He said a friend of his ran it in an '01 Silverado, and wanted to go a different route....I haven't done too much research on it yet, but I'm assuming with the 112LSA it should have a nice "lope"....lol....Will have to upgrade the tranny/convertor as well, so it may be a while yet...Not to mention getting the thing tuned afterwards. I just need to win the damn lottery....hahahahaha....

Yeah I feel ya, things start snowballing fast, gotta pay to play I guess.. Lol
Check out Performancetrucks.net for some more info on these motors. My 212/218 cam has a 114 lsa and it lopes, a 112 will be even better. Ill be upgrading to a level 5 4l60e soon and a larger converter, send some of that money my way when you hit the lotto!

Re: Idle problem....

Lol...If I manage to win anything, I'll be sure to send it your way..We just donated some money to the casinos last weekend down at NewKirk....hahaha.... Have a question though, did you lose any bottom end with your cam set-up..?..I imagine you gained some on the top end, but was just curious...I'm sure a decent size converter and gears will make up for some of the loss I'm sure I'll get, but that's just more $$ to add to an ever-growing list...I should have the truck done maybe by the time I retire...

Re: Idle problem....

Well the cam I have which is a comp cam 212/218 .522 .529 114lsa, works awesome with the stock stall but works even better with a larger one. I regret going so small now that I'm upgrading my tranny, but I didn't lose anything, this cam is proven to gain all over and pulls hard. But I'm sure with the one you mentioned a little low end would be lost without a converter and gears. Now that you mention gears, I need to upgrade that too.... Lol

It's a never ending process......Taking my truck in next week to get the intake gaskets/knock sensors taken care of.....Having a co-worker hook me up, so I'm saving quite a bit of money on the deal....:metal:

Re: Idle problem....

 They'll still have to wait....With the OT they are planning for us this year though, I should have my "buffer" built back up in a couple of months to start ordering...(Wanted to have the money to get everything done at once)...Now that I actually found a local tuner, that will help out as well if his prices are decent.... Speaking of which, did you have a custom tune done for your truck.?...I've heard BlackBear and Wheatley are a couple of the top dogs, so to speak.

Sooner84 03-27-2013 06:20 PM

Re: Idle problem....

A custom tune is a must, don't buy a programmer or "chip." My truck has been tuned with HP tuners. I've got a buddy that knows what he's doing with the program, so I get a pretty good price on tuning. I really need to buy the software and start learning myself though.. Blackbear and Wheatley are great, I haven't used either one but was leaning more towards blackbear before I knew someone that was local could do it for me.

Re: Idle problem....

Cool....I guess I'll go talk to the guy and tell him my future plans, and see what he can work out price-wise...If he's too expensive, I'll check into Blackbear. Would rather have somebody local due to turnaround times, but if I can save some money, it won't hurt my feelings to park the truck for a while..That just means I'll have to dust the Camaro off and drive it..;). Figured if I bought all the parts and had everything done at once, it would be money saved down the road but, as I said earlier, it's a never-ending process...Just when you think you've reached the point of being happy with your truck, you find something else to do......

Sooner84 03-27-2013 07:38 PM

Re: Idle problem....

Yeah it really helps having someone local to do it. But if you have another vehicle to drive when it's down no biggy. So far I have been upgrading in steps, I just don't have the patience to order something and let it stare me in the face, if I've got it, it'll end up on the truck within the next week or two..

Re: Idle problem....

Sssooooo .............New intake gaskets...New knock sensors...New harness for knock sensors...Idle problems are a lot better now, but still has a slight "shudder" every once in a while...Need to run some injector cleaner through it, and plan on an oil change this weekend...Read somewhere that some guys have been taking their 99-02 Silvys back in for a re-flash on the computer to get updates and take care of idle issues...Anybody know anything about this..?....
