crate motor crazy
Okay , i have a 86 c10 with a bad 305 . I was looking at gm crate motors ,,,350/260 ,,,,350/290 and 350/300. i am told the only difference is the cam ? Now 86 being the changing year for 2 peice to one peice rear main seal.. now i'm pulling my hair out . The gm parts guy said none of the crate motors would work, just rebuild the 305. Seems to me a flex / trans plate would take care of hat .. somebody please shed some light on this ...

Re: crate motor crazy
Yeah, your guy is off base here.
The only difference that would matter is the flexplate. The bolt pattern changed. Otherwise everything else will bolt up fine. I would never rebuild a 305. |
Re: crate motor crazy
Yep, change the flexplate.
Depending on your state, he may not legally be allowed to tell you to exhange an engine unless it is a 100% stock replacement (ie: same motor). Some states are funny about engine swaps and emissions especially if it's a daily driver and not registered as an antique (or off-road use only). The easy test is to tell him it's an off-road 4-wheeler only. Then he may suddenly say "sure, that engine will work great!" Or he is just clueless and didn't want to deal with you. |
Re: crate motor crazy
The "OUCH" part of that GM crate, is that they will warranty that 350...IF a 350 came out of that truck? Just a 'heads up", but I do agree with the others (flexplate change, & you are on the run? crazyL
