Roof lights
I have a 1969 1 ton truck that was a few years ago partially saved from the scrappers. It was a cab and chasiss that someone had lengthened the wheel base by cutting the frame. Anyways to save space (and most of the truck)the frame was cut off at the end of the cab w/ the bed and scrapped. I did save the rear end. The rear end is an Rockwell (pre 14 bolt I guess) I was thinking about reviving it and my question has to do with the factory cab clearance lights. These seem to be pretty uncommon. Does anyone know where I could source these? The roof is actually formed to for these unlike the later model body styles where they are flush mounted and can be added or removed to any roof. They are round cup like with a flat top (not bee hive). Any info would be appreciated!

Re: Roof lights
Welcome to the forum Hawssie!
Since you're asking where they can be sourced - member Roger Koop has a FULL set for sale: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=573918 I've purchased many things from him, always super high quality stuff, but these pics speak for themselves. Again, welcome, and recommend consider becoming a member - much better to be a member and have all the perks of buying/selling, etc that come with it. Hope that helps! |
Re: Roof lights
All C30 and bigger trucks had them and the pods your talking about started in 1969. The lights are still being sold at about any big truck parts supplier.

Re: Roof lights
You'll find the beehive style (70-91),but those 69-only (hockey puck) are rare to find. They are the exact same lens, but clear,as reverse lights on Stepsides, cab & chassis, flatbeds, and StepVans. If you find those you could pint the insides a color that matches the "amber" plastic.

Re: Roof lights
You could also just use amber bulbs in the clear lens

Re: Roof lights
We were just discussing this the other day, the '69 trucks came with both styles of lights, which type is correct seems to depend on when in the production run (as Special-K said).
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=569836&page=2 Either way, the round "puck" style lights are only available NOS/used here on the web. The "firemans hat" style lights are still available from GM and aftermarket suppliers and are a direct fit replacement. ![]() |

****PHOTOS**** My '69 had hockey pucks originally, that lens was included in the box of NOS parts that I got with it and is the only one left. It has the aftermarket Fireman's hats on it, so far as I know they were installed when it was repainted in the late 80s or early 90s. The reverse lens will, in fact, mount in place of the roof lens, the diameter and screw locations are the same, but the sealing surface is different. Reverse lens (OE, 1972), Hockey Puck (OE, 1969), Fireman's Hat (OE, 1971) http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps7de8dda7.jpg Hockey Puck markings http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psf3cb7a2f.jpg OE 1971 markings http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psfd6b0912.jpg Replacement (age/origin unknown, possibly GM) markings - the number on the underside which you can see to the bottom right is 684662, which is the GM part number for this lens http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps0609b259.jpg |
Re: Roof lights
Thanks for the advice. When I first noticed them they definitely looked unique to me. I am familiar with the newer style ( I called them bee hive but fireman hat seems more appropriate) When I said uncommon I meant this style as I had seen the F.H. style on other trucks. Well I will just have to go with the newer style, at least they will fit. Thanks again. I will join I didn't realize I wasn't a member already!

Re: Roof lights
I never tried to use a reverse lens for a clearance lamp lens, but was told they worked and know of some who used them. Not sure how they went about it,but I saw the job completed.
Those beehive/fireman's hat style ones shown are both aftermarket by Signal Stat but from different runs. The OEMs are made by Guide and have 69 on them, which is the year they were first used. Finding N.O.S. hockey pucks is the best bet on those. The only used ones that might possibly survive in useable condition would likely be off a camper truck with front overhang or from a place the sun seldom shines. The best survivor rucks come from where the sun is the biggest enemy, which wreaks havoc on plastic and rubber |

I'm curious now - I was told those were original lights, and everything else on the truck is so I had no reason to doubt they were. I'll have to go check the other 4 and see if the markings are the same. ***update*** Yeps. They are. Darn  |
