What is this?

I saw this on E-bay but I've never seen it in the pictures of anyone's engine. Just curiosity...

It looks like an oil fill tube for marine applications. My 454 in my boat has one of those that comes up off of the valve cover.

crazy4chevs 06-20-2003 02:15 PM

I saw one of these awhile back on e-bay and they said it was a oil filler for our year trucks. Ive never seen one on any trucks of our years though.

van mabee?

lukecp 06-20-2003 02:17 PM

Don't AC equipped trucks have the oil filler in the rear passenger side valve cover? I think i saw a pic of a restored truck with a long tube coming from back there to fill oil with.

toms68cst 06-20-2003 02:59 PM

Or is it a 4X4 truck thing??? I don't know for sure.

Cap'n Hook 06-20-2003 04:09 PM

My 4x4 Jimmy has that oil filler neck on the driver side valve cover, with the brace attached to the intake or the carb, one of the two, don't remember right off the top of my head!!!

Maximum Overdrive 06-20-2003 04:18 PM

We used to have a 72 Chevy 3/4 4x4 that had a tube like that for filling the oil.

SEVEND2 06-20-2003 04:19 PM

hmm looks like the Power brake booster Vac linethingy, so it mounts it or moves it, or that oil thing Mentioned above.

ummmm Dont know, I do know i aint got one

heres on on my truck

bouncytruck 06-20-2003 04:54 PM

Interesting, does it make it easier to fill the oil?

tom hand 06-20-2003 05:09 PM

it should be on any truck that came from the factory with power brakes

Stocker 06-20-2003 07:50 PM

That oil filler tube goes to the rear of the driver's side valve cover on my 72 (with power brakes and factory air). The brace is held by an intake manifold bolt. I think it probably does make it easier to add oil, since you don't have to worm the oil down towards a valve cover hole!

Here is one that came on my truck.

cheyenneman 06-21-2003 04:19 AM

My 71 has it also on the drivers side. It is a oil fill tube no questions asked.

My 70' 4X4 with PB has one too - drivers side valve cover in the back. I have a diiferent cap then the one on ebay. My cap is steel and screws on.

mdill 06-24-2003 03:04 PM

OK, I know it is not just a power brake thing, it
must be power brake + air thing, I know I want one !!

Mike D. (Have to watch ebay closer)

Thanks Guys !! (I only vagely remeber seening one
once 20 years ago before today)

bouncytruck 06-24-2003 03:31 PM

That is the first one I've ever seen on E-bay or anywhere else.

Boardrider52 06-24-2003 03:41 PM

ya my truck used to have one but i took it off

Long Knight 06-24-2003 03:42 PM

LOL! You guys make me laugh! I have one on my truck and I wouldn't get rid of it for anything. Slammed67 made fun of me for putting it back on after the rebuild, but I never drip a drop of oil. Now if I can just remember to put the cap back on...thank goodness the parts stores still sell them!:)

FrankHoy 06-24-2003 05:05 PM

I have a 72 Cheyenne 402 PB AC and it doesn't have this so I think it is also a SB thingy.

Yellow Cheyenne 06-24-2003 07:08 PM

I think it was on PB and AC trucks. If you only have PB, you can add oil on the front pass side. If you have AC and no PB, you can add oil on the rear drivers side. If you have PB and AC, the PB booster makes it difficult to get to the filler on the drivers side and the AC compressor brackets make it impossible to fill on the front pass side. This all applies to SB, don't know about the BB's.

I have pb, no AC. It's not on the option sticker but it's a good option to have.

Maximum Overdrive 06-25-2003 09:34 AM

The one on our truck was on a 72 without air but it did have PB. IT was also a 350 small block with automatic.
