Look what I brought home today..
 

Today I brought home a 1965 C10. It has around 6k miles on the engine since the rebuild. It has a 4 speed manual in it and it's a bit tough to find the gears so far... hopefully it'll get better with time.

I'm pretty excited about it and I'm already making a to do list. Disc brakes, line-x the diamond steel bed, new stereo.

Exactly. It's my everyday driver. All that needs to be done are a few light bulbs and the rest will be just customization.

However, I am a bit concerned about the transmission. It's been extremely finicky and has been tough to find the gears. The PO said he adjusted all the linkage yesterday but maybe he didn't do a very good job?

Thanks everybody. When I bought this truck I was told that there was only 5-6k miles on the rebuilt engine. I talked to the PO yesterday and he clarified that there was SIXTY thousand miles on the engine since the rebuild... Needless to say I'm a bit upset. I took the truck to see a mechanic and he suggested for me to replace the timing chain as it is whining. He also said my engine was a bit tired.

I think that the transmission linkage is all screwed up also. Hopefully that will be an easy fix and it won't have to be rebuilt. He also butchered all the wiring. I'm tempted to buy a wiring kit from Painless and starting over. Also, depending on how "tired" the engine is I might be on the market for a new crate motor.

UGH.... Any help or suggestions would be extremely appreciated. This is my first classic and finding all these demons is exhausting!

Also, the PO had all these cool engines in his garage. I have a feeling he put in an old motor and dressed it up a bit for the sale. :(

Does the engine smoke or run bad? I wouldn't get stressed out over it. Just fix what needs to be fixed and drive it. I can imagine the 4 speed on the column (didn't even know that existed) would be tough finding gears. My 3 on the column gives me a little trouble when its cold outside. I've been looking at floor shifters, may be something that would help you too. Just because someone says the engine is "tired" doesn't mean its junk. Was probably built a little loose from the get go.

I agree with Chris^^, but if the tranny is a problem, consider putting in a 5speed, especially if you have a floor shifter.

if you have a column shifter, throw a 700 in there, either one would make a real good cruiser.

clean up the motor, tune it, timing chain and drive her.

Today I took the truck into this car shop. I pulled up and there were all sorts of classic cars setting out front. I found the right mechanic for sure. He set the timing and the idling issue I was having and the backfiring disappeared. It's running much better.

The transmission however is still giving me problems. I was sitting at a light today and the transmission started grinding. It was in neutral but still grinding. I had to turn it off and restart it to put it back in gear. Would that be linkage or synchros?

Either way with a simple timing adjustment the truck is running much better. Its great to see progress even if it's small.

Welcome to the forum, your truck is really beautiful. If you're still running the original 3 speed column shifter, it's probably going to need some measure of rebuilding. They didn't work very well when new and nearly 50 years of wear makes them sloppy or non-functional. If the transmission is in good shape a Hurst shifter would solve the shifting problems, but you may not want to cut the floor especially if you are considering better transmission options available today. Thank you. My transmission is not a three on the tree. It's a Saginaw 4 speed. Do you think a Hurst shifter would still fix the problems that I'm experiencing?

If you actually do have a 4 speed in there you're not going to be able control it with the column shifter, you will have to put in a floor shift.

It is a Saginaw 4 speed on the floor. Not column.

Oh ok. It's just in the pics, there's a shifter on the column, and couldn't see the floor shift.

Maybe some pics of the floor shifter would help someone id and be able to help adjust. It's not visible in the pics as mentioned earlier. I also only see a column shift. They are fairly easy to adjust. There are a few different aftermarket shifters for floor conversions, and someone may be able to help you with some pics of it. Nice looking truck and it looks solid.
