Narrow Chevy Tailgate Band - Rare?
 

Found a narrow tailgate band in pretty good shape at the JY recently. It was on a truck that had *just* been put out in inventory. As soon as they pulled the forklift out from underneath the truck, I snagged it. Haven’t seen too many of them. Just wondering how rare (if at all) they actually are. Obviously, the GMC bands are a little harder to come by, but I still don’t see too many narrow Chevy bands. I don’t really have any plans for it, but I didn’t want it to get thrashed, so I decided to save it.

That is a band for the "Cheyenne" model. I wouldn't call it rare, but in good condition it is uncommon. You are correct, the GMC version is rare in any condition.

Would you be willing to measure that for me? Height, width, notch @ handle. I've been toying with a project to fabricate my own version, but don't have anything to compare against. Have a salvage yard tailgate that is drilled for a band, and would like to put SOMETHING on it.

It is in nice shape. All the mounting tabs are there and are in good shape as well. I was waffling about running it on either the short bed or the dually, but I don't know. Not really "period correct".

thats the tailgate band that was on my first dually when i bought it......still running it on my new dually to this day.....i really like it

Thats a 77 only band so it is very uncommon. If you have a NOS one its gold, if you had a NOS 77 GMC band it platinum.

My very first truck was a 75 GMC Sierra Grande. It had this narrow band and I always liked them better than the wider flat ones. Anyone ever seen one with the body color on the stripe and letters?

I have a pic of one somewhere that is polished and the stripe/letters are red to match the truck. It looks sweet.

Just thinking out loud here but an aluminum piece of the same overall shape and dimension, but just "brushed" horizontally in the center (no letters) might look pretty cool...

That is kind of like I was thinking too. My truck is a bit of a beater so I am not concerned about "correctness" and definitely not at the prices that even decent NOS bands seem to fetch. I have stainless bolts and acorn nuts in the holes currently but want to take a shot at something DIY instead.

keith dont you have access to some of this old tooling ? you could make us some hard to find parts...:lol:.....I know not likely......:lol:
