Help! Parking Brake Installation
I am remodeling the interior of my 72 Chevy short bed step side 4 x 4. I removed the parking break to install a new firewall cover. I have the brake back in now but I am having trouble re-installing the cable to it. It is very hard to pull the cable back to install the pin. What is the best way to do this? Can the cable be "unhooked" to make it lose so that it can be stretched back and the pin installed?
Thanks! |

Undo the the tension adjuster (under to cab).

Re: Help! Parking Brake Installation
I'm going to assume that this will be self-explanitory when I get underneath the truck. Right?
Thanks for the reply. Sounds a lot better than what I've been trying to do - pulling on the cable with a vice grips while trying (unsuccessfully) to slide in the pin. This requires a contortion artist, which I am not (I'm a broken-down-from-the-excesses-of-my-youth old man. |
Re: Help! Parking Brake Installation
yes, just follow the cable from the pbrake pedal - you will see that it ends with a bolt on it (and the intermediate cable that connects to the rear cables will pass through a u-shaped channel where the bolt is) - loosen that bolt and it will remove the tension on the cable. That bolt is always the first and last step of parking brake work.

That's great! It will certainly make things easier and less painful. Thanks so much!

I just did the exact same thing... A good pair of vise grips and a good grip goes a long way. I had a buddy pull the cable while I slid the pin thru the hole.
