Any ideas on sources for Bumper Guards for a '78?

Hi there!

We're in the midst of re-habbing a '78 c10 longbed & having a lot of fun on our first project of this sort. We've dropped-in a new engine, bought various new bits & pieces & are having bucket seats from a Suburban recovered currently to go in when complete. Paint will probably be in a few weeks, then we'll work on outfitting the inside & finishing-up various other bits & pieces.

Anyway - I discovered this board in my quest to find a set of Bumper Guards for our truck. It appears that until recently LMC & Classic Parts each had reproductions, but both say they have been discontinued by the manufacturer - though they also say they get plenty of calls for them - go figure.

Anyway, I've scoured all I can think of online & have come-up empty-handed. Im interested in either OEM in good condition or reproduction.

Any ideas/sources I may not have thought of?
Any help would be HUGELY appreciated!

Keep checking the classifieds on here. Sometimes they will show up. I had a set but let them go. I don't know for sure but JCWhitney used to have them at one time I thought. I think you can find them if you look around. I've got a set on my '76. I like'em and I'll leave. Good luck.

Are you talking about these, like on my 75?

I was about to throw them in the trash until I saw this Ebay ad:

Go to a junkyard. I paid $15 dollars at a pick-n-pull for a nice set. Only thing it cost me besides that was a lot of WD40 and a couple of trips out there. Had to go back because I couldn't break the nuts off it the first time. Best $15 I've spent on aesthetics so far on my truck. I wouldn't pay $100+ for them.

Go to a really big junkyard, bound to be at least one truck with a pair there.

Just curious, are these aftermarket bumper guards or factory original? I see you have like a texture pad on your guards while mine is just smooth. I'd be curious to find out how the pads are attached to your guards. I think factory was screw on and aftermarket was snap clips...or maybe the other way around. If you don't know that's fine, but I've been wondering.

I'll have to take a look at them tomorrow.
The ones in the Ebay ad snap in.

Based on that Ebay ad I would say mine are definitely aftermarket. The pads bolt to the back and mine have a couple of raised pads, top and bottom on the black rubber surface. I generally don't like tall looking bumper guards, car or truck. I'll probably take them off but I'm a ways yet from that point.

Thanks for checking. So smooth/clip together is factory and textured/bolted together is aftermarket. I'm sure there'd be a buyer on here for whenever you take them off. Very popular item...but I think they still look cool on your truck.

x2 on the junkyard. Seems like most squares I encounter at mine have them. Never wanted any bad enough to tackle 30+ yr old bumper bolts though.

Thanks everyone!!

We're going to try the junkyard, as everyone seems to be out of stock & I can't stomach the idea of paying $200+ on ebay. Wish me luck :)

Bring PB Blaster, 1/2" sockets, & a torch (if allowed, probably not).

Oh.....and may not have to worry about the bolts on the bumper guards, as we've ben debating replacing the whole bumper - If I happen to find one with bumper & guards in decent condition, might just need to get the bumper off - guards & all :)

This. I went and soaked them. Then went back three days later to pull them off. Ended up breaking a bolt anyway.

18volt cordless Makita SawzAll works wonders.

I ended up breaking the bolts on the old blue truck we had to get the off. Somebody on here is getting rid of theirs on here in another thread. You might want to snoop around and see if somebody has or is getting rid of theirs.
