700r slipping on WOT only.

Took the truck today to a mechanic experienced with carbs thinking my accelerator pump was bad. Turns out the transmission is slipping and the engine free revs on wide open throttle. The transmission shifts buttery smooth on normal acceleration and even 3/4 throttle. He test drove it and told me it doesn't feel like it has 2nd gear. The oil level is fine but it does look a Lil brown.

Anyways he quoted me $1900 for a rebuild. He said the 82-83 700r's are the weakest and that I will need a core. The rebuild includes corvette servo, shift kit, torque converter, stronger shells etc. I'm wondering if there's anything else that could be causing this? Like TV adjustment or something?

Look up patc. They will get you a trans with all that for less and these guys pioneered the standards for 700r4 performance.

1900 is to much for a hopped up 700r4.

It's cooked, that's how they usually go. What does he need a core for? Got a cracked case?? For $1900 there better not be any "stock" type replacement parts in it.

He's right about the early units. Smaller input shaft, etc. Just a weak unit all together, they were the very first 700's. Best ones are 87-93. Built many of them over the years. $1900 seems a little high even when factoring in overhaul labor, parts and r&r labor but not outrageous. PATC and Bowtie Overdrive are good to deal with. I buy alot of parts from PATC and would recommend them first. Remember, you will still have r&r labor unless you do it yourself....

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Yep he said 87+ was better, seemed like he knew what he was talking about. I'm not going to have him rebuild it though to much $$. There a guy selling one for $400, rebuilt a year ago to stock specs, think it would hold?

I changed the tranny of my crown Vic in my driveway this one looks like a piece of cake so I'm going to it myself.

A stock 700r (4l60) is not enough for a 383.. unless you don't get after it much..

Get a boost valve and a transgo shift kit. Add a sonnax servo and a high pressure pump spring and it should hold for a long while if your not hard on it
