T10 or M20?
 

Comparing the two which is preferred. Asking opinions. I want a 4spd but cant find one. Saw a T10 needing rebuild for 250 on craigslist. Is it worth messing with?

M20's are supposed to be weak. I had a M22 in my 66 Chevelle and it never broke. Beat the snot out of it too. People say the ears break off where they bolt to housing. I had mine bolted to a steel truck housing with the bigger clutch and it was Bulletproof. It got stolen one day:-(. I was looking for a replacement and was thinking about the t-10 too. They are also supposed to be weak unless you can find a "Super T-10". I LOVED my M-22 and I think we should be reunited. My .02c

Both transmissions are about equal,if you ask me. No two things are exactly the same,but I'm saying where ever they differ won't matter. They were both used in muscle cars with the same power range. The Super T-10s and M22s are tougher,but the other boxes are plenty good. You can break anything.

"back in the day"-----the m20 is a good 4 speed. If you are running a boat load of horsepower then go with the rock crusher (m22)--but Im telling you--its noisy,

I know many "old" racers who used to use the m20 or m21 (close ratio) for drag racing behind 396's and 427's, 454's. You could power shift them all day, very seldom did you hear of one exploding or breaking. If your synchros get excessively worn from hard shifting, you might chip a few teeth.

So, the t10 is a good trans. but dont ever be afraid of an m20 (now with all that said, I will also tell you that another good LOW horsepower option is the saginaw 4 spd. but if youve got over 300 hp, Id pass on that one)
One final thought---a "good" m20 will cost you from 600 on up. Rebuilding one with new synchros isnt a hard job either. Personally, Im replacing a 700R with a '72 m20 in my current build.

I happen to like the M20 myself but Muncie is all my cars had..:D:burnout:

An M20 is not weak. I'd say a M20 is just as strong as an M21. An early 60's T10 is a tad weaker than the muncies IMO, but the ones I've seen have issues were in cars that got thrashed. Any trans can break in any car, just depends on how it's driven.

Well ill have 375-400hp in a sbc. I really want to swap a m20 in if it could be found. Unfortunately 4 hrs after posting this thread i got to work and found out that i didnt have a job. They shut second shift down moved them to days and the young and less experienced,me only 21, wasnt needed. So now my truck is at a screeching hault. So no motor build no trans amd im getting married in two months. Im gonna try and find a cheap motorcycle forsale, and get a job at the new chevy dealership until i can figure out what to do. Kinda stuck between a rock amd a hard place

That sucks about the job situation. Once you get back on your feet, an M20 would be better, but I think a T10 would live behind a 350hp motor as long as your not beating on it every mile you drive.

Sorry to hear about the job.

I think "weak" is a very relative thing with transmissions. If you beat the hell out of one, especially at the dragstrip, they will all fail eventually.

Under normal street use, most will hold up just fine.

IMHO, it's more about gear ratios than anything else. The close-ratio boxes were intended for cars with lower rear end gears, shorter tires, less weight, etc....
You would have a hard time running one on the street and keeping the revs down on the highway at the same time. That 2.20 first gear is just not low enough

I'm not much for 4spds but I kinda like mine. But I don't like going 55, I need speed. So I'm planning on Chevy's NV4500. Good tranny.

The very early M20 had a smaller cluster gear shaft which was prone to failure by breaking the case the later version had a larger shaft which was fine . I destroyed an early M20 in a 67 Camaro back in the day replaced it with a M22 until I put it up for sale then I installed a later M20 the guy who bought it beat that car to death and never hurt that trans.

I did a quick search today and found that Gear Vendors makes an Overdrive unit for the Muncie m-series and the T-10. Now that would be fun! I think I will sell all my toys and look for Both for the dropped Blazer.

Been plannin' this all along on my '67,eventually. Till I get the GV it has 3.42s. That should be a good combo and hopefully with the O/D also.

I've seen,and had,some powerful motors with 3spds behind them. It wasn't all 4spds back in the day. Sure,this is better than that,but any one you get can run the truck along just fine. I just bought a complete Saginaw 4spd set-up from an '80s van for not much $.

Yea i actually saved a muncie 3spd from am old truck. Stuffed it aside for a ratrod but decided im not gonna build a ratrod so its on craigslist
