Swapping Rear Ends ****THIS WEEKEND****
okay this weekend im swapping my rear ends pulling the one from my 79 parts truck(also pulling non running motor and built trans) and swapping it with my good 77 truck
im taking these two trucks over to a friends house and if i feel like it i will also put the built transmission (from the parts truck) in my good truck is there anything i need to be careful of? i am re-using my u bolts and here i am two days ahead of time and im already soaking them in wd40 anything else i should do? |
Re: Swapping Rear Ends ****THIS WEEKEND****
WD-40 isn't a great penentrant. Try some PB blaster or "kroil" if you have a McMAster Carr near by, or something. Do you have lube and brake fluid on hand?
And a MUST...an IPOD/ CD/ Cassette, or your favorite radio station on deck, and some nice cold drinks of your liking. |

Soak your bleed screws and where the brake lines go into wheel cylinders too, this is just my opinion but I wouldn't waste muck time on old u bolts.Anytime I am swapping axles, zip wheel and no rusted nuts to mess with.If your out of the rust belt, you might be fine.Always had good results with WD40.Might not be a bad idea to grab some brake line & wheel cylinders in case a bleed screw twists off too...just went thru this.

i picked up some rubber plugs for rad hoses
not sure but may work for tranny tail too here i use them when closing up the pool for winter made a u shaped line with fittings for the tranny |
Re: Swapping Rear Ends ****THIS WEEKEND****
If this is the 9 inch ford swap you won't be touching the wheel cylinders. On the u-bolts make sure you use a wire brush to remove as much debris as is possible as that is what locks the nuts up.
Make sure you have a long breaker bar and a chunk of pipe for extra leverage just in case. |
