gauges on 87

i have a 87 r10 pickup. the oil gauge and the amp meter seem to be off. the oil gauge stays at 60 or higher. it will not move lower or higher. the amp meter will tick back and forth when blinkers are on. it also changes dramatically when started, and when the dash lights are turned on. just need some help on what i should do. i have no idea what i am doing. thanks a lot!

when the key is turned on the oil pressure shoots to 60. when turned off it goes to 0. im not too sure on that, but i think it does that. also, the amp meter has one pin missing from it behind it. what is that piece called?

Try wiggling the connector on the back of the cluster. They're touchy. I think the amp meter is supposed to be that way, looks like it should have an extra pin, but does not.

An 87 with an amp meter gauge? Did you install a 73-75 gauge cluster in your 87?

Hard to explain this all without pictures.. Im not sure what the "amp meter" is. It shows the volts of the battery. I dont know what it says volts or amps. They look like this trucks model gauges . The gauges slide into clips. They are metal looking clips. Usually for each gauge theres about 3-4 metal clips that the back gauge screws go into. I have not installed any different gauges.

this is an amp gauge,it reads + or - current flow to/from the battery

ok you have an volt gauge(reads all plus)
you may have to remove the cluster and make sure the connections are good

Is that the only thing that could be wrong. What are the clips called that the gauges slide into?

how is the battery power?
can you meter the actual power at the battery/alt points
don't know the clip name,if it needs a clip it will have a board contact point, not just a hole
i believe the oil goes high if the sender is off(power works no pressure signal)
and seeing the volt gauge bounce when a signal is on,check charging
other then that, check the paths on the cluster, shorts do weird things

remove cluster?
about 12 screws for the outer bezel
then screws (in white plastic)around the outside of cluster
speedo cable and wire harness plug, shifter needle, gotta be out/disconnected...
it should be loose to jiggle up and out
