Kingpin replacement in Austin, TX?
 

I would like to have the kingpins replace in the 57 swb 3100. Do any of you have a recommendation in the Austin metro area?
The one recommendation I have say's he has not replaced kingpins in 15 years, but it should only take about three hours.

Have you checked with these guys? http://www.crushproof.net/index.html They not only do restoration and hot rod mods but do repairs on older rigs.

it cost me $130.00 for the new king pin kit and pay a machine shop to hone out the bushing to match the pin diameter and installed them myself. It really isn't that big of a job and it would only take a couple hours to do it in your driveway

I went on Rockauto.com & bought the MOOG kingpin kit for $35 shipped.
I'd never done kingpins before but these are pretty easy. Just follow the directions.
Hardest part is removing / installing the plugs, but can be done with a sharp punch & hammer. Then a mallet to drive in the new ones.
Oh - and don't grease the outside of the bushings.

Even if you discount the listings indicating "first series" (my truck is a '55.2) AND you set aside the other-than-3100 series trucks, there are still multiple listings. There's a Moog listing and several Raybestos listings. Listings with long or short lock pins.

Then there's a couple listings that just say "Professional Grade" - I have no idea WHAT that would fit? All the trucks? If I were ordering now, I wouldn't know what the hell to order!

Oh. Right. Sorry about that.
The .921 diameter pins are for 3/4 & 1 ton trucks.
You want the .866 diameter pins. Any should work, though I'd look up parts for a '57 just to eliminate any 55 1st / 2nd confusion. Different years used different bushings / bearings, I don't think it matters much what you use so long as you don't have any slack left over & the bushings get grease.

Ok, that makes sense.

IF I go with a Sid's dropped axle - I'm leaning that way - I MAY just have Sid do the king pin upgrade and drop link, etc mods as well. Then it'd be just R&R for me.....I hope:lol:

The extra cost on mine was what I paid a machine shop to hone the bushings to the size of the pin. My king pin kit at Napa was $40

I had never done kingpins before but did my own on my 57, 3100. If your going to do it yourself, make sure you have a big ass vice and a large hammer! I broke my **** vice trying to drive my old pins out.

I have the wheel apart and all day I have been trying to get the king pin out. Hammer with drift, heat, penetrating oil, and I have moved it 1/16". I gus I will put it back together and have it done. I hate being stopped.
