8.8 ford rearend in c10
 

Has anyone on here mounted an 8.8 rearend into a 1969 c10? I am switching to 5 lug and have an extra 3:27 posi 8.8 setting here. I know I could just buy axles for the 12 bolt. But, it is a 4:10 single track rearend and is really not good for cruising long distances.

So I guess I'm looking for advice from those who have attempted this swap. Thanks ahead for any assistance.

All you'll need is spring perches, and match the U joint up.

You'll need the Axles drilled for 5x5 or 5x4.75 for Chevy patterns.

Find one close to the width of your stock rear end weld on the mounts and change the bolt pattern.

or... sell that stuff on craigslist and build the rear end that fits the application already?

I had thought about selling the 8.8. But, I can't purchase a gear for the $100 I have in the 8.8. Let alone a posi unit and disc brake setup. That's why I was asking what all I would need to do the swap. Trying to compare the cost. The mounts needed are $35 from cpp and I needed the adjustable trac bar either way due to air ride. I guess the only other cost is the ujoint. If I am missing anything please let me know. Thanks for the replies and keep them coming.

To change the bolt pattern you can have the axles drilled or custom made axles.The disc you can redrill as well or currie will sell you blank disc that has no lug holes in it.On tip i can give you when you weld on the mounting tabs have the axle tubes fully welded to the center.From the factory they are only 2 plug welds pre side its a weak spot with a lot of power.

What did the 8.8 come out of? Just curious if the pinion is offset or not.

I have a 1991 ranger extended cab with tow package and I've never heard of a 8.8 have a low gear like the 3.27 gear the explore and the Ranger use that rear end and its not wide enough and only has the 10 to 11 inch drum brakes if it has disc there small rear disc brakes

I know what your trying to get But the 8.8 is not that strong of a rear end the 12 bolt is a hell of a lot stronger and the emergency brake cables will not mount up the same

If you have the newer ford ranger rear end them gears are not made for big horse power you will shred them gears and the yoke is in a different spot for the cost of you swaping out a weaker rear end

you will make you spend well over what it will cost you to put gears in

If your looking for gas mileage Go this way 700R4 cut down drive shaft move the trans cross member back 1 to 2 inches mabey 3 then in stead of 3 gears you have 4 gears less RPM's buy the 1988-92 700R4 the 92 has the last trans update better lubricating and more check balls

Any of the rangers or explores are narrow remember them Firestone tires that had a problem of people under inflating them.

Later they said the chassis was no narrow and caused roll overs in sharp turns

do some measuring from backing plate to backing plate I go even further measure where the leaf spring are and measure the GM 12 bolt i bet you will be off 3 inches and if you try to widen it the tire will rub the Leaf spring

3.27 gear is probably out of a crown vic cop car.But ford put the 8.8 in everything rwd since 86 so something wide enough won't be hard to find really.As far as brakes the options is long the 97 and up f150 had rear disc options or the mustang cobra brakes which are 11 inch disc single pistol pbr calipers.

so witch ford did it come out of the ranger is to small or not wide enough any thing else mabey but every thing but the f150 is a car rear end and the struts on mustang or the crown vic the f150 has different shock mounts i'm not going against you you wanted every thing pointed out best off is to keep that 12 bolt them are getting hard to find in a truck

dose yours have ladder bars or leaf spring if you have ladder bar's the 8.8 will be a little more trouble to fit

Mark VII LSC would have been a Trac-loc 3.27 disc brake rear.

8.8 is out of a 97 mustang gt. I'm building a twin turbo 5.3 ford fairmont and had purchased the 8.8 for that but found a built 8.8 for a good deal. That's how I ended up with the extra rearend. My truck is coil spring rear. I will have to clean the brackets off of the tubes before welding on new mounts.

man i have a 1971 that has the posi and its a leaf spring and i love to have the coil spring one I guess i will have to brake down and buy the brackets for my 12 bolt i have a 1965 3/4 ton with coil springs and love the ride

The only bracket that will be a pain to cut off is the upper mounts that are made in to the center,But unless you have a super low truck i doubt they would have to be removed.

I have air ride on this truck and the ride is great. Cpp has the brackets for around $35 to convert your12 bolt housing. You have a couple nice looking trucks there. I will probably have a 12 bolt for sale soon if interested. You could place your posi in it and go.
