Pulley help
 

Just bought a new power steering pump with pulley 1978 so its the press fit kind the question is how doi get the new pulley on pump there's no press fit fitting for the new one were would I get the hardware for it and can I use the press fit piece from the old pump and pulley

There is a special tool for that, I would suggest taking it to a shop. Should not be too expensive, but that's not going got help you this weekend... Kinda a PITA. You could use a longer bolt that threads into the pump with a nut and washer also on it, thread the bolt till you cannot turn it in by hand, then use the nut to press the pulley on, keep checking to make sure your not bottomed out because you don`t wanna break the bolt in there! use some atf on the inside of the pulley and on the shaft during assembly, it will help them go together. make sure when tightening the nut that the bolt is not also turning, maybe put two wrenches on to be safe.

I know about the pulley removal tool the question is the new pulley has no hardware to attach it to the pump

If you want to swap the pulley. go rent the tool from autozone

To put the pulley on do what the second poster posted.
Most of the rebuilt pumps you buy come with a stud a nut and a thick washer.

You tighten the stud into the center of the pumps shaft

You then hold the pulley in place put the thick washer in place and put the nut on.

You tighten down the nut which pushes the washer against the pulley and forces the pulley onto the shaft.

You then hold the pulley and back off the nut and remove the stud leaving the pulley on the shaft.

I have the tool but often times I will just use some all thread 4-5 washers and a nut to do the job.

If you need pictures let me know and I'll take some to show you what has been posted.You are basically forcing washers against the pulley so it will slide onto the shaft.

Yeah I bought that special tool and rarely ever use it.I can never find it when I need it.

First of all I did read the post...... I don't think you guys understand what I'm saying. Let me try again how do I put the new pulley on the new pump if the new parts came with no hardware the new pulley just goes on the new pump nothing is holding it on it loose how do you press fit the pulley when there's nothing to press on not trying to me a smart a** it's basically like putting a wedding ring on a pencil what's going to hold it in place hopefully no one mentions a special tool again because I have them

Sounds like the wrong pump/pulley? Can you compare it to the old pump/pulley?

The pulley is a tolerance fit on the shaft so they sold you the wrong pump or pulley.Take it back or give us the part #'s of what they sold you.

Thanks man,

I took back the pulley they gave me the wrong one. What a crazy couple of days. Really had me puzzled. It was driving me crazy. Well thanks for the help/info
