Switch from old style to new style parking brake system?
 

My '82 crew cab looks to be missing a lot of the parking / emergency brake system and I'm not comfortable with that. It has the interior pedal and some rusty rear cables but I think that's it. Do you guys see any issues with switching over to the new style setup? It looks much simpler and looks like it might even work smother. It appears that all years use the same pedal so I wouldn't need to replace that. Also, do the 1 ton trucks use the same E-brake parts as the 3/4 tons?

if your switching get one with the switch on it for the idiot light
not all have them my 78 dosn't 79 does

I like the 84-87 style better. You will need to drill a hole in your front cab mount bracket as the 83 and older use a different tab on the frame. Does the kit come with all of the cables?

As far as I know, there is not a kit. Just individual components.

You can go to the wrecking yard and get all the brackets. The drivers side has a bracket that the two cables come through and attach to a pull tab that makes them act as one cable basically. Some new rear cables and all the front cables and brackets will be all you need.

Are the new style cables sealed better? Rusting parking brake cables is a constant issue for me, even when used regularily. Back when I actually still bothered with them I kept visegrips and a hammer on hand so I could unjam the stupid things when they decided not to slide back anymore. More than once I had to do some parking lot surgury to get on with my day. Of course, nothing like a blown brake line to make you think about the fact you should get around to replacing those cables... yet again...

Well since your in Canada maybe that has more to do with the salt used on the roads? My stepside was sitting since 2009 with them on and they work fine

could be the salt but just rusty and "not" using them makes it worse
I've heard of people getting pulled over here for a lane safeties
when the brake is applied it needs to hold the truck,
if not it's a fine for inoperative brake system
don't say it needs to release tho lol....
if Ebrake parts are removed,considered unsafe,plates can be pulled on the spot
I use mine when i think a bout it,just to keep it loose
