Doesn't everything need to be hot to check my tranny fluid?

I have always been told that your vehicle should be at operating temperature before you check trans fluid. I guess it expands when it warms up. This way you will not over fill.

that's what it says on the dipstick

And right before pulling the dip stick out, go through all the gears pausing at every one. This will fill the valve body and what you are checking is basicly the required reserve oil.
