max towing
 
hey guys, just wondering if anyone can tell me what is the max weight I can tow (camper) with my 1970 gmc 1500 2wd 350 3spd standard trans. (with frt.disc brake conversion).

I'm thinking the spec is around 5000-5500 but not really sure.The limiting factor will most likely be braking rather than power.To go the max rating you'll need trailer brakes to be safe.Look on the VIN and see what GVW is to get an idea of capability.

My therory on pulling with trucks to be SAFE is 1/2 ton -up to a 24' camper, 3/4 up to a 36' if properly balanced,any thing more 1 ton and up. I know there will be some more comments but I have seen some VERY UNSAFE things on the road.

When pulling any trailers always have the proper towing hitches and brake boxes on your truck.

When I was working at the camper lot there was a guy that come in one day that had been in a accident with camper he was pulling and told us the insurance company wasn't paying for damages because he didnt have a brake box to help him stop in time. I dont know the whole story but I use that alot to people because it could be true if you stop and think about it.
