Fender filler Rubber
 

I have the two pieces below that fill the area next to the cowl vent. I remember there was rubber stapled and/or glued to these parts MANY years ago. Do they make a replacement rubber? or do you use the edge gasket that went on the inner fenders?

I have never seen them with any rubber on them, but dont know for sure, I am going to have to go look now.

I remember there being rubber on mine as well, but just the same its long gone. I believe that it was separate from everything else and was only attached to the pieces pictured above.. Im intrigued to see what you guys come up with.

I'm going to start checking the local shops, The rubber is simple a dust sheild so a flat piece of rubber oversize should work.

I have those pieces still stapled to my fenders, and was curious what everyone was going to replace them with, i don't think those pieces are included in the kits LMC, classic, etc sells.

I found one used original part you can see the old staplers where the rubber mounted, I guess I'll just glue them on?

I have never seen any rubber on those pieces. Not saying there wasn't from the factory, I just have not seen it. There is another piece right next to those pieces, that is an 'L' shaped piece of formed angle, that has a piece of rubber stapled to it. That rubber looks similar to what is on the inner fenders. This piece is held to the fender with the same style clips that attach the splash shield at the rear of the fender, next to the door.

The section you are showing is in front of the plentum box, the area that these pieces go in is the area betweem the plentum and the door pillar. (its the little things that drives us nuts with our trucks).

no biggie, it is the black bulbous shaped section the air comes in from the top and go out through the vents near the floor in our cabs. These parts close off the area behind this plentum and pilar from debris and dust? from getting in.

I still do not know where these go exactly? do they bolt in with those two holes?

My thought was use an inner tube cut to size drill it for pop rivets that will last longer than glue would, but then at our age the glue would last long enough Just kidding now..Vernski:haha:

Timing is good on this! I am putting new fenders on my 65 Step Side and am getting ready to work on these parts. My original fenders were shot and poorly repaired in the past so went with repop fenders.

Here is how the filler parts looked on my old fenders.

They are so pitted and the bolts are rusted so I am going to make new ones.

As you can see there are not any holes in the repop fenders.

So, this is an easy thing to build. Have the template and will be making new ones.

I did not see any staple marks in my old ones but as you could see, they were in pretty sad shape. It seems to me that you would not want rubber around these parts to seal them against the plenum. It would just be a place to hold moisture. The purpose seems to be to keep stuff from coming up from the wheel wells.

Splashing up or dripping down, that area isn't the trouble spot that is going to rust out the new fenders just like the old ones. It's the open cavity just below the fender attaching bolt that allows debris to fill up the rear fender support and turn it into a compost heap. GM never implemented a design correction, but it's easy enough to fix.

I fabricated a simple filler plate to cover the opening, and permanently installed it with urethane windshield adhesive. This way nothing can get in the channel, but water can still drain out the bottom.

Of course capping the top really doesn’t do much good unless all the gaps under the fender are sealed as well:

I sealed my front fenders back in 1998 and they remain debris and rust free.

Nice work Markeb01, I'll be stealing that idea when the time comes. My current fenders are stuffed solid and may break off if you look at them the wrong way.

My truck still has the rubber stapled to the driver side piece. It's a flat foam rubber about 3/8"x1/2" wide and stapled to the edge of the metal, not the face like shown above.

Funny, the passenger side has no evidence of that filler piece ever being there, as the holes in the fender are smoothly painted with no scoring from screws. Guess they missed it on the assembly line.

my 61 didn't have anything on those pieces
