rear end questions
 

I have a 1970 c10 pickup with a 12 bolt 5 lug rear end. I recently purchased a 12 bolt 6 lug rear end with posi and gears. the rear en I purchased is set up for leaf spring mine is coil so my question is: will the posi and gears work in the rear end I have with the 5 lug axles? I guess the question would be will the splines line up? or will I need new axles? Thank you!

There are length issues with difference in years, possibly spline count too. Plus there is the possibility that the six lugger could be from a 4 wheel drive?
Are the leaf spring pads under the axle? or above? Pictures?

As far as swapping parts around, yes. The carrier and gears would fit in the other housing, but it is not a simple bolt-in thing. Gear set-up is a very touchy thing, it needs to be perfect, which is harder to do with used gears.
Ultimately, if you did this to gain a posi unit and gear ratio change.....I wouldn't go through the hassle. Who knows how much wear is on the clutches of the posi unit.....assuming that it really is one.
Rather than dealing with mixing and trying to match parts, buy a new posi unit, pay a pro to install it in your original housing, and be done with it....
Sell the other stuff.

The leaf spring pads are on top. So your saying that its not worth the hassle to put the posi unit in the rear end I have?

the carrier and gears you bought will fit in the housing you already have.... and since you already have the carrier, id put the S.O.B int there!! .... just when u do it...either use your ring and pinion, or his ring and pinion... you do NOT want to use his rear gear and your pinion, or vice versa

i would use his rear gear and pinion if it checks out okay... because they might be a different series carrier...if that was the case... your gears wouldnt fit on his carrier

If you do change the gear set, make sure to take the shim from under the pinion and swap it.

The pinion shim stays with the housing.

Jason take a 2nd to look at the top front of the passenger side axle tube on both rear ends for the #'s & letters stamped into it where it meets the pumpkin. Then post them as since you have a 1970 the axle on a 1970 6lug stock truck were the same as the 71-72 in length so since you have 5lug rear now someone may have pulled your original 6 lug axles and installed 5 lug 71-72 axles. 1970 was the only year where this was the only thing that needed done to switch to 5 lug. Now if the posi-trac rear ends good and that 6 lug is a 1970 rear-end you could just swap out axles & have the leaf spring perches removed and the coil spring put on it.
