Finally got the top off.... and found rust... help!!

Well, after over a year I finally got the top off my Jimmy this past week. It is great driving it like this, particularly when we get good weather in Minnesota.
The problem is I found this rust on the upper windshield frame behind the seal. I am hoping others have fixed this and can give me some pointers. This is an original Jimmy from California with hardly any rust, so to find this was a bummer... Thanks for any help or advise!!

If thats all there is then it isn't that bad, but I have a feeling if you pulled back the rubber at the top on the inside windshield gasket you might find some soft spots

The piece with the screw going through it is actually part of the door weatherstripping so that part is easily replaceable. Here is closer to what it should resemble

Well, if it's a keeper then you might as well do it right. I had the same problem on mine and as I opened the rest of it across the top, it was the same.. bad.. I really had no choice but to replace the whole windshield frame. Luckily, I found a donor vehicle in northern Calif on Craigslist and had it shipped down. Had a body guy measure it multiple times because I was worried that if a mistake was made, my chances of finding another one were slim. Anyways, he got it right on target, and we reinstalled the original glass with no problems. For me it is a keeper so I went the extra step but that's a decision you will have to make..

Thanks for the replies guys - I will look closer at the rest of it tomorrow, but I don't recall seeing any rust on it when I bought it - and I looked around the inside of the windshield... That is why I was surprised to see this. The vehicle has the original paint, and is definitely a keeper in my mind, so I will take care of it. I just am hoping it is a small amount to fix... I have read that they don't make a patch for these areas, but not sure if its true???

No after market patch panels available. You have to use an original piece if you are going to cut and replace the cancer. If that is all you have though you should be able to clean it out real good, fab in a little steel to fix your problem and cover it all with some por15 or Mastercoat before painting it back to match.

Thank you for the reply - I haven't had a chance to pull the inner windshield seal back and look, but I do know that everything you can see looks good (other than this area of course). I haven't used these products before, but am picturing having to spray something into the inner structure to address any corrosion that may be started in there??

My71gmc -

If all you need is some repair work on the ends, I may have what you need in my winshield frame patch panel stash. I don't have any full frames, but I might have some good ends that you can use as patches. Let me know which side you e need, and how far from the end you need to repair. Pics work the best. If I have what you need, you can have it for the cost of shipping.

No problem. Hope I have what you need. BTW, your Blazer looks like a really nice survivor.

Lots of Ochre Blazer owners posting! I like it! So many rust converters/removers out there. Be careful what you use though. Some do not like paint afterward so make sure you treat and prep accordingly. For something like that I would just use a rustoleum rattle can rust converter. Few squirts should go along way, then finish out your rust repair and prime and paint. Good luck and keep us posted.
