Every 6 months, clean out the weep holes at the bottom of the front fenders.
Otherwise, the inside of the fenders will accumulate soil layers like the soil layers of time of the earth.
Oh, and the fenders will rust away.

You are correct!
Grease coated metal looks like new after 40+ years.
Dirt coated metal; not so new.

Allow plenty of time to stop.
Do not follow other vehicles too close.
You only have one itsy bitsy line to stop with.

How about replacing the filler neck hose every 10 years as general maintenance to avoid gas fumes in the cab
