'67 shortbed tranny question
 

Hey guys, I've got a 67 shortbed c10 that had a standard 3 speed in it when I got it. I dropped it off the the transmission shop to have a 700r4 installed that was given to me. Three weeks and $900 later the mechanic tells me that he installed the transmission but it wasn't any good. It'll shift and drive but has no take-off power and kills it if you stop in gear.

Long story short I'm about to have a known good 350 tranny out of my 78 suburban. Can anyone tell me if that's going to be a bolt up swap, or am I going to have to swap out the drive shaft again? (700r4 was out of an 82 firebird if that helps)

It's not your tranny. It's likely timing of your motor.
What motor you got?

It's got a 350 in it. The engine is almost brand new and never gave me troubles with the 3-speed in it though.

Likely the distributor got damaged or the timing is out of wack.
What's your timing set at?
Got a pic of your motor?

kills the motor when in gear.....

your torque converter is locked up....sounds like its hooked up wrong....

that guy doesnt know what he is doing....

I have a few pictures of the engine from before I put it in the truck, or I could go shoot a picture now if you can tell me what you're wanting to see.


Inclined to agree with you there. He came well recommended from some people I've worked with here in town, but after spending $900 to get a broken truck back I probably won't go see him again personally.

Take a pic of the motor from the driver's side.
And don't be so quick to condemn the mechanic. Afterall you gave him a used tranny to install.
And what's your timing set at?
Did the mechanic remove the distributor for the install?

first off best of luck to you on getting ur truck fixed , I am the do it myself type and ,,, well I done opened this thread and have to ask ,,,, am I reading this right that you paid $900 to have a transmission bolted in ur your truck ? that's not for the transmission too ? just bolting in a transmission you already had ? :confused:

I don't know if he removed the distributor or not, and I couldn't tell you what the timing is set at as I've never messed with it. Here's a picture of the engine as it sits now. Let me know if that tells you anything.

Yes, that was for installing my transmission. He originally quoted me 600 when I spoke to him. It climbed a bit as he went though. I'm learning to "do it myself" but haven't ever messed with transmissions so I thought I'd take it to someone else for this one.

I thi nk I agree with the torque converter being the issue. Go back and ask him if he removed the engine or dist.---also ask him for DETAILS on how he hooked up your overdrive.

I'll third that the converter lockup is the issue , the 700r4 uses a shorter driveshaft than a short turbo350 that most c10s came with

I appreciate everyone's reply. I'm gonna wait until the weather around here cools off a bit and then tear into the transmission with my dad (previous owner of the truck) and we'll get it sorted out. Right now he's agreeing with ya'll that it's the torque converter not acting right.

Depending on how long it is until I get it working I'll update this thread and let you all know.

Keep us informed! I had a local guy that I asked to service (drop the pan, change the oil, check the regulator/governor) and he drove it once and said it needed a new tranny. Took it home and did everything I asked him to do and its been running fine and strong for 4 years. I'm sorry he got your money, but I would agree with the rest of the subscribers about the hookup on the torque conv. Even if you go somewhere else, I would ask him if he pulled the motor or messed with the dist/timing when he did the "work" so you can tell the next mechanic what may be the problem.
