Truck idles high in park/neutral
I've got an '82 with a 350 sb with a eldelbrock rpm cam and a 670 holley street avenger carb. For some season, my truck will idle higher when it is in park or neutral. and normal when in gear. Is this normal? I don't have a tach hooked up yet so I don't know what rpms it's at. This was a freshly built engine with maybe 60 miles on it.

Re: Truck idles high in park/neutral
They do idle up when not in gear cause here is no load on the motor. Mine idles at 575 but jumps up to about 900 not in gear.

Re: Truck idles high in park/neutral
Advance your timing to 14-16 degrees, then slow your idle down. Shouldn't be that big a drop. Maybe 150 rpm at the most.

Re: Truck idles high in park/neutral
How big is that cam? It make like a looser torque converter. That can make a bigger drop when going into gear.

Re: Truck idles high in park/neutral
did you check the fast idle adjustment on your carb, that normally does the trick

Re: Truck idles high in park/neutral
I forgot to add is the a/c kicking on, that will cause a higher idle.

Re: Truck idles high in park/neutral
It's a edelbrock performer rpm cam, with a 3k stall converter. Which is what edelbrock recommended with the cam. Also no a/c on the truck. And I really haven't messed witj the carb much, other than the curb idle screw.
