Cab mount kit?
 

While under the truck yesterday wrestling with the fuel line rubber connections, I noticed just how bad the cab mount rubber bushings are. I mean, those are cracked so badly most have fallen away! Is this something I need to fix before I try and drive this truck or can it wait?

What all need I do to replace those anyway?

I would do it soon, even if the rubber is falling away there is a bolt that is holding the cab to frame but without the rubber bushing its putting more stress on the frame and body. Also, there are different body mounts pending which year and model so get the correct bushings.

I replaced mine by using a combination of 2 bottle jacks and blocks of wood, first for a couple day's spray some PB Blaster or equivalent on the nuts to help break them free, then unbolt them, don't forget the front mounts on the radiator core too as your fenders are connected there, lift one side slowly after the bolts are removed, one jack on the cab support with a block of wood, the other on the front, go slow, a little at a time until you can pull the old mounts and put the new ones in, get the bolts back in and start the nuts, then move to the other side.

While doing this you should be looking for any kind of binding, be it shifter linkage or whatever, just be aware.

OK man, thanks for the warning. Could you or someone else get me pics about where to place the jacks and blocks? I have a 1972 SWB 1/2 ton, 2 wheel drive. I was planning to jack the whole cab up at once but this isn't necessary?

Also, get the rubber body mount kit, not the poly ones. Unless you want to feel every crack and bump in the road...

This is an easy job. Hardest part will be getting he fasteners to break free. Loosen the fasteners, jack up one side only enough to get the cushions and fasteners out and back in, then do other side. Torque to spec. The LMC catalog and web site has a very good diagram of the cushion placement. The kits do not contain the thick washers so you will have to reuse yours.

OK.....if I can get by jacking one side at a time that will make it a one man job....do I need to unhook anything (steering column, linkages, wiring)?

Oh dear! What if my washers are rusted out? Those bushing look ROUGH.

which washer is not included? I just got a kit from wes and thought it had everything. I was going to go install it today actually. I can probably reuse my washers since its not completely rotted out under there.
Also the LMC catalog shows the kits come with everything in the diagram. unlike the steering column pics they have where there are a few grey items with no part numbers.

I don't recall unhooking anything major, but its been a couple years, just go slow and look for anything as you do it.

EDIT: sometimes very thick washers are used to help with body alignment issues, i had some in my truck that i was able to leave out.

Well, I ran by a local garage today that specializes in older cars and trucks. A fellow there confirmed that this cab mounting job was in fact "pretty easy" and that I could in fact, jack up one side at a time.

He also said I could just replace any rusted through washers with something from Lowe's if need be.

I don't trust LMC....what about Tucker's Classic Parts? They have a set that includes bolts and washers....

Do I need to remove all 4 bolts at once or just remove one side at a time?

I'll get started on this as soon as I can order and receive a cab mounting kit.

i got mine from wes at classic parts. it was over $200 including the rad support. rubber feels nice and heavy but I havent installed it yet.

I was just mentioning LMC in regards to the missing washer they dont include (which is actually just a spacer for body lines).
to be fair ive seen good and bad comments on LMC body mounts.

Classic Parts eh? I may give them a call tomorrow as their prices were a little less than Tucker's when I ordered a new fuel sending unit from them.

JointTech, maybe we can do this at the same time and walk each other through the process!

i should have left for the office where the truck is an hour ago. then i got sucked into the tube. I finally got my pants on and now im back at the pc again not changing my mounts !!!
