Disc brake swap

Being new to the suburban world, what is the economical way to enhance stopping? Would a 87 or under be pretty compatible for a front disc swap? Would I then get into a 5 lug world and swap rear ends too?

I used the front axle off of an 87 Burb. 4x4 for mine, a very easy swap to do.

Re: Disc brake swap

Thanks Mike, this is my first chevy "truck" not to knowledgeable on the compatibility or tricks of the trade. I am a nova guy (I have a 66 wagon), I've always wanted a burb or a pickup so when this presented itself I was all over it. A 69 long bed may be making its way to my driveway soon too, that's a whole other tread though. I need to go through the whole braking system from the master cylinder back so all advise is greatly appreciated.

The Suburbans have the same basic frams and the same suspension as the pickups. Yes the '73-'87 C10's make excellent donors for steering and brake upgrades. Here is one of a few threads on the subject. More can be found in the '60-'66 FAQ Index found at the top of the main page in the '60-'66 section.

As for changing the rear axles from 6 x 5.5 to 5 x 5, you can either purchase the aftermarket conversion axles, or switch to a '71-'87 donor differential. But be aware that those will be 1.5" wider than the '60 to early '70 differentials.

If you swap out the front be sure to grab all the steering components. This is a great time to upgrade to PS. Is your's 4 wheel drive or 2?
