283 Intake Swap
 
I have just acquired a '64 C10 that I am looking to improve on the stock 283. I bought a Edelbrock 2703 intake and a Holley Avenvenger 570cfm Carb and I am looking at doing the swap this weekend. I've noticed that the new intake has a breather hole but there is none on the stock. Do I need to use this or do I just plug it? I hate just putting in an arbitrary plug, can someone offer some direction? I also have an HEI distributor so I am set there. Any input is appreciated.

you plug it if you don't need it. you don't need it if your valve covers have oil-fill, breather, and PCV holes.

you can use it. what valve covers are you running? and what f-s-larry said. you can use it as an oil fill.

If you don't use it you can get the appropriate size freeze plug & put it in.

Take the Holley back and get an Edelbrock for starters..

You can plug it with a freeze plug as suggested or put in an oil filler tube and breather to keep the old school vibe going, not to mention a super convenient place to add oil.

Keep the Holley....

Does it have the stock motor, I thought all 283 intake had the hole in the intake, you sure it it 283.

It is stock, maybe I missed the breather hole and will have to take a closer look. From those not familiar, this is what the intake looks like, it has the filler hole in front.

I'd use the tube and breather cap, always thought that was old school cool. That's the way I remember them so I guess I'm old school myself!

He say his stock 283 doesn't have the fill tube and the new intake does. So does then he have the og engine or something later. If stock motor the valve covers will be sealed to.

Yes, the stock 283 has a fill tube on the intake that is why I chose that specific intake. I do not recall seeing a breather but it sounds like I may have just missed it. I intend on keeping the original valve covers so no fill issues, I just gotta find the breather.

Well after doing more research it sounds like the breather on this engine is by the distributor and called a road draft tube. I think I might just have to convert to a PVC system, anybody know for sure.

In this link on the #9 post there's an adaptor that replaces your draft tube and you use an inline pcv that hooks to the back of the carb.

And on some 283's the adaptor on the draft tube was hooked to the air cleaner. A pcv was mounted in the fill tube at the front with a non breathing cap.

if yours still has road draft tube i would upgrade to the PCV system much better

Correct, the VENT is the road draft tube. The port isn't on the intake, it's machined into the block. You can use a freeze plug and a little RTV to block it off if you have vented valve covers or you can just get the correct sized grommet, push in a standard PCV valve and run a hose to a vac port on your carb just like if you were running a PCV valve on your valve covers. I have all the PNs at home if you need them. This type of setup along with the vented cap on the oil fill tube should be sufficient ventilation.

If the vent port you are referring to is the one at the back near the rear carb mouting hole, that is for stuff like your brake booster vacum, etc. You could plug it up if you have no use for it.

That intake was made both with and w/o the oil fill tube from edelbrock

Thank all for the responses, I am traveling this week and trying to do research for the weekend. I'm glad to hear that it's in the block and I can still use the new intake, which does come with a vented oil filler cap like OEM. My carb actually has a port for the PCV in addition to the others mentioned. I like the grommet/PC option, if you happen to have a PN for that and the PCV it would be greatly appreciated.
