Transimission shifter

I am having problems shifting in and out of gear (as in the gear shift lever on the column). (th400) and want some ideas as to what to look at to make it easier. The picture is the linkage at the transmission. It for some reason just doesn't look right.

You probably have multiple problems going on here.
First: the red arrows point to a area that get a lot of wear. These likely need replaced or welded up. Look at them, you can see the wear.
Second: It is likely the column shift tube is worn at the shifter lever.
(Both of these add play in the linkage)

Third: It look as though your engine is listing to the Driver side. I would suspect the engine mounts are toast. This shifter mechinism should be horizontal.

These three issues are why you are having problems.

Or maybe this bracket is bent upwards. Causing the mis-alignment

Aside from above suggestions, you can disconnect the column shift linkage and try to manually shift it to see if it will move easily through the gears. If not, then it's inside the transmission. If it works okay by hand then it's the linkage or the column as mentioned above.

One other thing - if it's just hard to go through the gears. As in hard to move the shift lever, it may be hardened grease in the column. Happened to mine and I had to dismantle the column, remove the hard chunks of grease and relube. You may be able to spray WD40 or similar down the column also.

heres my thread on the nightmare of getting it to shift properly. I ended up getting a new shift linkage for $30 to replace that thing.
