steering column bearing problem

I took the column apart to repaint and noticed that nothing holds in the bearings on the ends of the column. I that the way it should be or is something missing?

The lower one has a spring & clamp that push against the brg. The upper is pressed in the mast jacket. The plastic piece under the steering wheel holds it down when the steering wheel is tightened down.

There was no spring or clamp on the end. Where can I get parts like that?

what's the best way to grease them (and with what type of grease) while it's apart? I've heard to just "pack" them (while still in the column) as one would pack wheel bearings(??) sorry to hijack, but thought this might be something you'd like to do while you have it semi-apart (and I had the question myself).

You never stated but going off of your original question I am thinking that you are working with a non-tilt steering column here, I went ahead and took a detailed picture of each type so maybe they can also help someone else out in the future. Mel :chevy:
