LS carburetor intake using a stock DBW throttle body?, pls help
I have an idea and want to know if its possible to do. I want to get a LS carb intake with EFI bungs and mount a stock DBW 78mm throttle body off an 2004 5.3 intake on it. Can i mount the throttle body on it like a carb? I can fab up an adapter plate. I will probably run a speed density tune so I wont need a MAF. I can then fab up a mount to house a old school air cleaner on top of it to make it look somewhat period correct. With the DBW throttle body i can retain cruise control easily. I have hptuners and can adjust most settings to get this to work. Pls help me with inputs to get this working.

There are off the shelf adapters for that purpose, but most of them have a 90 degree bend for hood clearance, like this one:

You could probably just take a square of steel or aluminum plate and drill it with the appropriate bolt patterns. |

Found this today. Mast motorsports has done it.

wow that looks restrictive...like it needs a 102mm TB.

a 87mm throttle body flows around a 1000 cfm from what i read.

That's pretty slick. I like it.

Weird, my post disappeared. Few companies have done it, I like the idea but it also requires going with an SD tune.

That looks cool as hell! But I would rather stay with a maf tune and not SD..

Re: LS carburetor intake using a stock DBW throttle body?, pls help
I know it's an old thread, but
did anyone find a cheap / easy / crafty way to mount a standard air cleaner on the 4" OD of an LS throttle body? I'm trying to wrap my mind around the parts / pieces available and what it would take to put a stock TB on a Victor Jr. intake, then put an air cleaner on it... My junk already runs, mind you, I just want it to look like something. |

I'm headed in that direction . I've mage my bottom adapter from aluminum. Haven't got to the air cleaner adapter yet but I have some ideas soon to come.

Re: LS carburetor intake using a stock DBW throttle body?, pls help
The part to adapt the 4-bolt DBW throttle onto the 4150 type flange is available on ebay.
Doesn't do me any good, using a Gen III 3-bolt throttle body, but the plate isn't too hard to make I don't think. To get the carb type air intake onto the Gen III / Gen IV throttle body is a small trick. The TB's are 4" O.D., most air cleaners are 5 1/8". McMaster sells 1" long sections of 4" ID / 4 1/2" OD aluminum for under $10. If you have a lathe or a nearby and reasonable machinist, this could be turned on one side to 4 7/32" ID. Emery cloth the outside of the TB until this tube is a tight fit (but doable with a plastic hammer, say) and tap it on to the TB, leaving the lathe-turned side up & exposed 1/4 - 1/2". Then you are just a $10 carb adapter away from running an old school intake on your LS. I haven't measured how much meat is on the TB to see if it could be opened up for the carb adapter without the collar on it. I kind of doubt it; it would need almost 1/8" of metal to spare in the wall thickness. The only other detail I can think of is needing some sort of support for the air cleaner stud. I guess you could cross-drill the collar & put a piece of bar across the diameter, that bar itself being drilled for the carb stud, but this is starting to sound ugly. |
Re: LS carburetor intake using a stock DBW throttle body?, pls help
Maybe a few mm's if your lucky trying to bore it out. Thats why the aftermarket (i.e. Nick williams) TB's came alone. There aren't a ton of good options for the dbw 78mm TB without going to something like the xdrive (that thingy that lets u run the newer style dbw tb)
