1964 4x4 axle question
Who has swapped out their original 4x4 halfton axle for a later model axle for disc brakes and more readily available parts? im looking at doing it to my 1964 k10 since i need new lockouts anyways and disc brakes. And was wondering what year/make to get the new axle from in order to get the right gear ratio right. And is it usually a direct bolt in or is their alot more work to it than that?
Likewise has anyone used a different year/make/model for their k10 hubs ive heard of people using international or ford with 19spline internal bolt lockouts but didnt get enough info to know exactly what they came off of. just seeing the options out there before dropping the 300+$ for new lockouts thanks |

Re: 1964 4x4 axle question
My front axle came out of a '64 that I had picked up for parts. I knew that '64 didn't come with disc brakes so I had to do some research when I swapped the axles into my '63. The front came from a '73 3/4 ton Chevy and the rear came from a '73 Dodge van. Dana 44 front and Dana 60 rear. The front was a piece of cake. I got the brake lines from 4 Wheel parts for a '73 Chevy. I think that in '73, that the 1/2 tons were also 44's. I think they went to Corp. 10 bolts later on though. That said, years ago I put a '80 something, Corp. 10 bolt 3/4 t into my '57 Napco after the kingpin broke and the axle fit just fine. And the axle came with Warns that were good, so not to sure on the interchangeability on those.
