Keep that canopy over the top of it is the best thing to do. That keeps it out of direct sun light which in time will cause the wood to shrink and crack. Keep it dry and try not to spill chemicals on it. You can paint it like the factory and that will help also.
You are lucky to have wood in that shape. It is rare to see. |

If the factory paint and the black perservative are gone you could use the time-honored motor oil treatment if the bed is to be exposed to the elements. It soaks in and around the wood and protects the metal. Mostly used oil was applied but new oil is a better choice.

On my trailer deck I use a mixture of about 50% linseed oil and 50% turpentine once a year. That's what we used on our grain trucks long ago. We saved the used motor oil to spray down the equipment each fall before storage.
