Help Please!!!!!!

well now i dont know whats wrong. last night my truck ran decent. today its doing the same thing it was, running rough and the dies. except now it also has large amounts of black smoke coming from the exhaust. It also shakes horribly. the smoke doesnt smell sweet, but more like a boat or something that runs off a fuel oil mixture. does the carb just need to be adjusted or did i blow a head gasket (it did over heat a few times last week) or are the rings shot? i am at a loss.. i cant really afford to be without the truck. the engine has 39k miles on it. please help! :whine:

Black smoke means its got alot of unburnt fuel. I would check the plugs and if they look okay I would do a compression check on the cylinders. Im thinking its ignition or carb needs to be leaned out.

ok well, buddy came over tonight and we looked at it. upon further inspection the carb is pumping about a gal a sec of fuel. so thats one problem. though the original carb still made the truck run bad. same buddy is letting me borrow his 96 Jeep Wrangler that i helped him drop a 350 in until i can get my truck running. so i am going to use both carbs and a rebuild kit and see what happens next.

check to make sure that the choke is correctly set up

i know the choke on the carb i put on isnt working its vac operated. i am going to tear into both of them today and hopefully get them done, or mostly done! like i said. we will see if this fixes it.....

82 should be electric choke. Odds are the element is bad. That's about the only thing that would change so much in such a short time. I think your carb predated the electric solonoid. Like was said...MAKE SURE the choke is opening.

Also make sure that you have fresh gas in the truck, old gas doesn't burn very well and causes the motor to flood itself.

yes orignally it came with electric choke but the spare carb that i had that i put on there so i could rebuilt mine isnt electric. BUT. i happened to aquire a rebuilt q-jet! its good to have friends. just have to drop it on and adjust it. and HOPEFULLY it will be ok. if thats not the problem...... then its going to be a LONG week!

WOOHOOO, new FREE carb went on, started right up, had a small problem with the fast idle, but now its running GREAT and even idles where its suppose to at 600 rpm. Probably need to do alittle fine tuning on it. but for the most part its done! still going to rebuild my old carb, will probably go to a junk yard on monday and see if i can find a good carb body. will probably end up selling the old carb after i rebuild it and tune it on my truck if anyone might be interested.
