4.1 starter

Well I'm going to attempt to replace my starter tommarrow. It's on my 78 4.1 250. I have been doing all the work on my truck myself with the help of books and the web never really done any kind of mechanical work before its been fun. Well my question is how hard is it to replace my starter anything I really need to watch out for or is it pretty straight forward

Re: 4.1 starter

1. Disconnect the negative side of the battery followed by the positive side of the battery.
2. Carefully tag all the wires at the starter with which connectin they go to. Pictures are nice but make sure you know what goes where.
3. Alomost all L6 starters have a nose brace. Note which way it fits and do not leave it off, doing so will cause it ot want to break the back of the block.
4. Check the starter pinion to ring gear spacing - should be instructions with the starter. If any spacers came out of the old one they will probably be needed.
5. Clean the positive battery cable end willand check ti for cracks or bd corrosion befor hooking it up to the starter. It's a lot easier to fix issues while you're working in there.

shouldn't be that bad. mine needed some thick shims to clear the flywheel. D13 covered all the steps.
