AC Delco EGR Part Numbers Confusion
 

So, the original AC Delco EGR valve that I pulled off was: 17087194

I believe it was change or updated to part #:19210654

Both of these line up to 214-5073

So, I order it up from Advance Auto.....box arrives with the 214-5073 part number on it, as well as 19210654.

But when I pull the part out, it says:
19209958
120421

I've tried to look these number up but found nothing. Is this some new number or is the wrong part in the box?

I can't answer your question but I can suggest that you contact AC Delco customer service. They have both a phone number and an email address on their website. However, don't expect a lot of clarification.

Example: I recently bought a water pump for my 2002 Cavalier. AC Delco had one pump for about $20 and another pump for about $80. I asked Delco what was the difference. I was told the the $80 pump was custom for my vehicle and US made, and the $40 was foreign (i.e. Chinese) made and a "one size fits many" configuration. When I bought that good US made $80 pump it said "made in China." I wasted $60 on some bad information.

GM and Delco are famous for changing part numbers for no apparent reason.

If this number is cast onto the part, thats not a part number, but a casting number.

That must be the deal...

Out of curiosity and also price, I purchased the same part number from Amazon and waited for delivery (214-5073). Sure enough, they are in fact identical so I guess the number on the valve is a manufacturing type number. Both were, unfortunately, made in China now.

Production dates are just below part number:

120421 = 2012, April, 21
110712 = 2011, July, 12

In most likelihood AC-Delco did not manufacture this part, but instead EGR was built to a set of specification by the following China mfgs, trading companies:
Hangzhou Ocean (Auto Part) Industry Co., Ltd.
Ruian Kabang Automobile Electronics Co., Ltd.
and possibly others

placed in the AC-Delco labeled box.

Sad if true.

So, here is something I picked up from many years in the manufacturing business.

Generally speaking, a part is considered interchangeable with another part if it has the same "form, fit, and function". Appearance may change (e.g. color, overall shape, extra/less non-essential features, etc.) This allows one part to be used on many different manufactured assemblies, and is why you may install a part and find extra mounting holes, or have to modify the part slightly to make it work in your application. This also accounts for different part numbers for the same application. I recently installed an unfamiliar part number AC Delco power window motor which was correct for my application but I had to had drill out rivets in my existing mounting bracket and reuse it by adding nuts/bolts/lock washers because it was not furnished attached with the new motor.

So, engineering configuration for a given assembly may show a component part number change at a given "effectivity" (such as manufacturing date, serial number of assembly, etc.) The engineering change gets translated into an "assembly bill of materials" which may reflect both component part numbers as acceptable, or it may have a "hard" effectivity, meaning that the new part number supercedes the old part number and the old part number is not to be used at all (this might happen in the case of a safety upgrade or recall induced change or actual design change. )But as stated above, sometimes GM makes a part number change for no apparent reason.

Keith might verify this in the case of GM practices?

Every manufacturer seems to change part numbers for no apparent reason. I've gotten more than my fair share of "old stock" that has a few different part numbers either stuck on it, or hand written with the original or previous part number crossed out.

Jeff, if you get an oppertunity, just page through an aftermarket emmsions product catalog. While the manufacturer will have designated part numbers for various revisions or calibrations, the aftermarket has one part number that covers all models. (Ford IAC and EGR valves for instance, ford has umpteem different model numbers depending on the ecm calibration code, but the aftermarket has... ONE to cover all similarily equipped engines). Some time spent at the BWD online catalog may reveal similar results, it'll just take a lot longer than a print catalog does to look up various applications.

As for your egr, if it fits, use it. It is not that critical at all. It either opens, or it doesn't. =-)
