I believe the belts broke while hauling a load of top soil last week. The next day, I was running empty and noticed a low speed vibration. When I parked it, I saw some tread separation. I left it parked in my father's driveway and today when I stopped by I noticed this. My father said he heard (what he thought was) a gunshot about twenty minutes before I got there.

Exactly what I was going to ask. I bet they're old, more then 6 years or so. The date is coded on the sidewall

I've had the truck for two years, the original owner passed away about 5 years before I bought it. So they're at least seven years old.

I'm sure they're old, but I've seen older, dry rotted, tires haul heavier loads over longer distances. I'll agree age is certainly a factor here but this just wasn't enough tire for the job. And it wasn't one load either. I hauled a lot of crap on those tires, as I'm sure the previous owner did also. They'll be replaced with LTs. I never liked P tires on a truck anyway.

I have had LT's separate carrying no load. from age.
Be happy it didn't tear the fender or worse. And replace you old tires.

my factory spare seperated. it was on the front right going home, crusing down the grapevine (in cali north of LA) pulling a 24ft enclosed with my 77 blown c10 in it... that sum ***** put dents in my truck and there is rubber marks all the way down the truck.. age can abuse tires pretty badly...

Never have had any issues running P-metric tires other than they don't handle as well. That said, I bought a set of wheels and tires for my 3/4 ton 4x4 Suburban and the tires on it are P-metric. The tire shop told me they would be worn out in no time. I've driven a year so far with these tires and hardly notice any wear whatsoever.

Driving a truck using a tire rated slightly higher than you may need is certainly smarter than running ones with marginal or slightly under rated tires. If it's just a car with a bed you don't have to worry.
They say 7 years is about where you draw the line for age...with the newer tires that seem to be intentionally made to only last so long,putting tire company profits before customer safety. I know of many 20 or more year old tires that still serve their purpose and have no dry rot. The tires on my '72 are the ones that came on a truck I bought in '04 and have no idea how long they were on that truck-1st picture. The second picture is from '07 when I had tires on it I bought in '91. The '71 wrecker I just sold had tires on it I bought in '88. When I git rid of my '71 Custom Camper/slide-in camper it had tires I had bought in '89 on it. These are all truck tires from before they were made to rot before wear (unless driven daily)

That's what happened to mine when I very first got my truck.. maybe they were P tires too? Can't remember, didn't really look. Just replaced 'em.

I've had old 10 ply tires do that. I would guess that age is a much larger factor than exceeding the load range... The combo of age and overloading is the kiss of death.
