Manual Transmission cross member question, Are V8 and I6 Different?

4 Attachment(s)
Does anybody know the correct answer to : What is the difference between a manual transmission bell housing mount crossmember in a V8 truck and a I6 truck. I know that they would have to be bolted/ riveted in a different place of the frame since the engine sits forward in the V8 but is the cross member just moved or is it actually different. I have one that I think is out of a 1968 C20 V8 truck but trying to verify it. Thanks for any help.

Should be the same, different mount location as you said, also the bellhousing should work on V8

IIRC there are actually I6, V8 small block and V8 big block versions. Can't tell you the detail differences though.

Subscribed on this myself. Just removed the same cross member from a '71 stick shift, no SIPD as glove box door is gone but was "told" had a 350 V8 with a Muncie 4 speed car trans behind it.

There is a difference, if your engine stands are using the 1st two holes, then it had a V8 and the bellhhousing support is mounted forward. If it's a I6 setup, the back rivet is really close to the cab. The holes won't line up if you try sliding the 6 to the 8 position. Also, the motor will be tilted forward and the crossmember will have an incorrect angle. So far, the difference I've seen is the I6 support has two slots cut out and the V8 doesn't.

Todd- Set your support on a level surface and see how much angle there is where it goes inside the frame. I'm thinking if it's for a V8, there should be more angle than the one in the photo below. Notice the feeler gauges used to make the bubble level. This is facing the drivers side.

I am going out of town after work tomorrow so it will be Sunday afternoon before I can check the angle and I will let you know. Thanks

Well mine wasn't the same.

I changed from a 6 to 8 and the crossmember didnt work. It was the factory one and I had to find a V8 truck and change it out.

From what I can tell it takes about 1 1/2 inches to get the level straight on mine. With the bottom sitting on the floor, I measured up to the top flange and it is approx. 10" in the front and 8 1/2" in the rear.

Not sure about the big block, but the v8 have more of a twist because they are farther up the frame. the I6 crossmembers are more flat. I have a gmc crossmember in my c20. I guess its the same as the v8 mounts because it fit and works correctly.
