Candy vs Pearl?
 

Ive searched the internet and this site but cant find a good definition on candies and pearls. My very basic understanding is pearls are a flake thats added to your second base coat and candy is an actual clear coat? at least that is what Im finding in my searches? Im not a painter, nor will I be painting my truck when I get to that point but would like to have a better understanding of what these are.

Pearl is a powder that could be added at anytime. in the base coat or in the clear. Candy is a liquid and can be sprayed over silver it seems to add a lot of depth to the color may take a lot of coats to get there. I used Kandy from ( TCP GLOBAL) in my case over the base coat which is metallic and mixed with the clear, also adds more depth.

Candy is basically a translucent color (you can see through it). Think of the colored Plexiglas that the old gassers used to have for windows. Same theory, in a paint finish. I'll add one correction to the post above, Candy is a liquid and can be sprayed over silver or other colors of metallic basecoats. The candy when added over top provides the color and the translucence of it adds the depth. Depending on whether you chose a silver, gold, or other color base, will affect the shade of the final color, given the same layers of candy. Silver will be the brightest, gold a bit less, etc...

Pearl is typically a powdered form of metallic, and can be added to basecoat, candy, or clearcoat, depending on what effect you are looking for.

As a general word of caution.....don't do it, especially since you are not an experienced painter. Both of these make getting an even color coat much more difficult. They will look blotchy or stripey and are very hard to duplicate for repairs.

Fortunately there are some really candy-looking base-coat colors out there now, so you don't have to deal with that to get the color you want.

Oh no no, I won't be painting my truck. I will be paying someone to do it. I'm a fabricator and can make damn near anything. I have painted, quite a bit. But am not a painter. Maybe if I got with a basic base coat I would do it myself.

Candies can be painted over anything even chrome if its prepped right. Yes chrome, my front bumper is cobalt blue candy and its my daily driver. Its all about the prep.
