Just brought home a 1982 crew cab
5 Attachment(s)
I bought this one site unseen thinking it would be a good parts truck, but its too clean and cool to cut up. Its a stripped down government truck from the local Air Force base. 6-292 with a granny 4 speed. The previous owner rigged an electric fuel pump into a gas can setting next to the battery tray. I need to figure out what mechanical fuel pump fits so I can get it running without spraying carb cleaner in the carb. When I looked it up, the fuel pumps only go up to the 1980 model year for the 292 engines. This truck does have an in bed spare tire carrier and a bunch of factory delete plugs. I'm thinking this truck could be good for towing and hauling the family...maybe a 4x4 conversion...

Re: Just brought home a 1982 crew cab
No reason to have door locks! I am sure it never left the base!

Nice find on the truck! My experience with the CC squares on this base is what convinced me to buy my 87 CC, I wish I could get another but don't think my wife would go for it :-) |

Slight emission controls difference post-80. Any six banger fuel pump will work, particularly since your hard line isn't there. Question is why they did the electrical pump, most likely rusted lines or plugged sock in tank.
Wish that was here in MI. I love it. |

Re: Just brought home a 1982 crew cab
This truck came from Beale, went to a used car lot where the PO bought it, he drove it for 2 years and it wouldn't pass the smog test because the car lot put the wrong carb on it and paid off their smog people to make the sale. Since 2001, the PO went to the DMV a few times a year for one day trip permits to take the truck to Collins lake for camping. Its been sitting for a couple of years.

Re: Just brought home a 1982 crew cab
Always wondered how the military decides to retire a vehicle. The mechanics could keep that thing in service, pretty much indefinitely if they wanted to. If they weren't required to get new vehicles at some point. I mean if its just a base truck, why even spend the money on something new? Rebuild kits for the engine and trans are cheap. A new truck, not so much. Anyone have any insight into this?

You gotta factor in the price of labour and maintenance

And if its not used for a long time they will sell it off too.

Re: Just brought home a 1982 crew cab
Plus a command get X amount of dollars to use a year,. if they use it all they get more the next, if they don't use it all they get less the next year , so they blow through money like a drunken sailor.
