307 2 Barrel throttle cable troubles

I have a 71 with the stock 307 engine and 2 barrel carb. It is an automatic transmission truck. Can anyone share a picture of their throttle cable bracket on the intake with the throttle cable installed? Mine is binding and driving me nuts, and help would be greatly appreciated.

ttt. Does anyone have a factory two barrel setup they can share pictures of? I'd really appreciate it. Here is a picture of the truck.

Take a pic of the carb showing your problem.

Here is the picture. I've had the carb rebuilt and I've replace the accelerator cable but the bracket for the cable don't seem correct. Its binds and is really hard to press the pedal especially when starting off from the truck sitting still. You pretty much are always gunning the accelerator. Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I hope someone with a 71 P/U will send me some pictures so I can tell for sure. This is the first 2 barrel setup I've ever owned. Ton of stuff available for 4 barrels. No one seems to make anything for the 2 barrels.

Re: 307 2 Barrel throttle cable troubles

You gotta search for a pic. You can't wait for someone to majicly produce one. I looked.
Lots of aftermarket ones.
Do you need to stay stock?

Re: 307 2 Barrel throttle cable troubles

I've spent hours looking for a picture of a factory setup. I would like to stay stock if possible. I'm almost to the point of converting it to a four barrel setup. I think that is what most would do, probably the reason no one has stepped up with a picture.

Have you searched on here thru projects?

Mine is a mess but all original
Trans is a p/g
It did have a little trouble several years back kind of sticking.
That is when the plastic tube broke on the throttle cable.

John thank you for the picture. I can see my spring is in the wrong place and I believe I have the wrong throttle cable. The original cracked just like yours and I ordered one from LMC truck and I thinks its for a 4 barrel. I really appreciate you taking the time to share the picture.

Re: 307 2 Barrel throttle cable troubles

I had a 307 in my truck originally. I may have the old cable somewhere. I think all v-8 engines use the same cable. The differences are 2wd vs 4wd. those are different. I will look for mine.

Re: 307 2 Barrel throttle cable troubles

In my experience the 2 bbl and 4 bbl cable are the same. I have hd them bind up where the plastic sleeve at the end slides over. Yours looks kinked. Can you re clock it in the bracket? I also dont see a return spring in the oem position, although that wouldnt cause the binding problem.

I did relocate the spring like the picture Hutch sent and that helped some. The cable still seems too long. Also my throttle bracket on the carb seems a little different. I appreciate all the help guys.

I think that my carb was a replacement before I got the truck (not oem).

After the plastic tube broke it seemed to work somewhat better.

I thought when it broke I would be on the hunt for a replacement but it seemed to work fine and that was quite a while back.

Maybe try the old cable if it is still around

Re: 307 2 Barrel throttle cable troubles

This is just a guess but take the cable off of the ball on carb. Check and see if you still have binding. You may have something bent on the carb linkage that makes it hard to open. Also check the pedal inside the cab. Let us know what you find.

Thanks for the picture. It does help. This message board is great in the fact that now anyone that has similar problems can benefit from this thread. Once totally fix I will add pictures and let everyone know what worked for my truck.

Greg, looks like your cable runs crooked from the bracket to the carb linkage. I'd try bending the bracket back towards the firewall such that the cable-to-bracket (assembled) sections are in a straight line, AND the bracket-"plug" itself fits flush against the bracket rather than at an angle.
