Wheels don't fit after disk upgrade
Finally, I've got the frame back on 4 wheels. But, the nice Alcoa slotted wheels it had before won't fit over the rotors.
I have 1973 disk on the front and a Dana 70 dually on the rear both 8 lug. I am looking for suggestions for replacement wheels. This is to be a working daily driver type so I don't need bling. |
Re: Wheels don't fit after disk upgrade
what size of wheel? or is it the hub that they will not fit over. the 8 stud had a different size hub after 73 -larger

Re: Wheels don't fit after disk upgrade
The original wheels only have 7/16" lug nut studs and the '73 and up use 1/2" or if you have the JB 8 brakes they are 9/16" If that is where your problem lies.
Saying "they don't fit" isn't much to go on. What part is keeping them from being mounted up? |

Thanks for the replies.
The lug nuts and bolts are the same on the '66 and '73. I don't know if the '66 had been altered before me. I'm not sure what size they are but I'll check (I suspect 1/2"). The nuts are flat faced and not conical as the wheel centers on the hub not the bolt pattern. The front rotors have a center lip around the hub that is larger diameter than the center hole in the wheels, by 1/16" or so. The wheel will not fit over the brake calipers. The inside diameter of the wheel hits the outer tie rod end and the caliper mounting bracket when attempting to put the wheel on. 16" Alcoa slotted aluminum wheels. Don't know the width. Dave. |

What's the plan for the truck? You could always get semi truck adapters and run semi wheels

I converted my '69 C30 from drum to discs from a '76 C30 and had to use the later wheels, mainly because of the lug nut hole diameter, but I suspect the original wheels wouldn't have cleared the calipers, either. A lot of drum brake wheels will not clear discs. |
Re: Wheels don't fit after disk upgrade
the early wheels are hub centric- can use flat faced nuts-so the wheels fit close to the hub. these wheels (8 stud) will not fit on the 73 and up hubs as they are to small. the 73 wheels and up will fit the earlier hubs irregardless of bolt holes. here are a couple of pictures to illustrate

Re: Wheels don't fit after disk upgrade
Downlow2xfo, I like the looks of those rims but I'll have to find some that were stock after '73. What Ron said.
I'll get a build thread started when I get a little farther along, but its a '66 C-30 dually with a flat bed dump getting a 5.7 LS-1 (haven't decided on the transmission). I will drive it often and use it on the farm. |
