Ball joint dust boots

Pressing new ball joints in a 1964 c20 using a loaner press. The rubber dust/grease boot looks like it is going to tear right off once I start as its so tight in the control arm hole. Am I missing something here?

Press in the ball joint, put the boot on after.

+1....roll the spring off the balljoint boot and remove it and the boot.....then put it all back on after pressin the ball joint inta place.

But, have everything, including the ball joint press cups clean cause once the boots off, its easy to get grit in the ball joint and yer gonna have trouble later if ya do.

The boots are already on the ball joints. Though they probably came off for install but didn't want to screw up. Thanks guys

Re: Ball joint dust boots

Ok gonna start over on this. I have 1964 c20. 5 lug disc brake spindles off 1972 c10 to put on. I thought I need to match ball joints to spindles. The ball joints look like they won't match lower arms as the cup they press into may not allow the boot to go back on after they bress in. I've bent they press tool trying to press them in and have stopped. Wondering if 1. I may have wrong ball joints or 2. If this swap may not work with c20 arms. Any help please.

You have to have C10 lower arms to do a swap over to C10 brakes. Your C20 lower arms use a larger ball joint than C10 and will not fit the spindle correctly.

Get a set of C10 lower arm (stock or aftermarket) and use '72 C10 ball joints. You'll be good to go.

Thanks mike, the uppers appear to look like they work, but the lowers not so much so. I'll look into the lower arms. Any idea if I'm better off with 72 or 64 lower arms?

A guy from aspen auto compared both control arms and said they mount different. I might be better off changing out the crossmember to do this. Anyone know what crossmembers bolt up to 1964 c20 2 wd?
