Possible wheel bearing prob on my 66

Now that I have new mufflers on the truck I can hear all the creeks and groans the old girl makes. When driving down the highway at 55 (or whatever speed) I can hear a sound that sounds like a transmission in a manual truck if that makes sense. Kind of a whining noise. When I let off the gas it stops. I think it might be the rear end bearings cuz it doesn't get worse if I jerk the steering wheel left and right putting more pressure on the left and right bearings. I probably should have checked the bearings when changed out the rear end seals. :waah:

Could be bearings but a wine is usually associated with the gears.....tranny wine is gears, a wine from the rear is quite possibly ring and pinion instead of bearings.

Rear end gears, not bearings. Loose pinion nut, improper backlash, etc.

Thanx guys I'll have to get on that soon. The pinion seal leaks and I was going to replace it anyway. Can I get the bearing out without tearing the whole thing down?

The pinion seal leaks
This may be the cause if the fluid is too low.

To change the pinion bearings, the pinion has to come out. To get the pinion out, you have to slide the axles out, and pull the carrier out. I agree that the noise you are hearing is likely from the gears.

Well that sucks. Befor eI put this rear end in a looked at the gears and they looked great. I guess I should have had them checked by a pro. One more project for next year.

I have a one piece driveshaft with new u joints. I'm hoping to get some time to take it to a rear end guy to see what he thinks. I'm not going to work on it any more this year and will only drive it a few more times before the snow flies so it will have to wait for a fix till next year. Maybe posi new axles and new bearings. But that means new wheels and tires and I'll have to put off the front end rebuild for another year.
