Fuel Tank Ground - where is it?
 

have read a few threads on fuel gauge problems and a constant thing mentioned is to make sure that sender has a good ground. the cap at top of tank for sender installation on my '68 does not have a place to attach a ground wire. any pictures of what to look for or where to attach one? told that just cap being screwed into tank and mounting straps are not reliable grounds for sender operation.

Is your tank bolted to the body? Is the screw down for the sending unit tight? It should be grounded. Make sure the battery negative side is grounded to the chassis and the block. Check the dash panel plug and make sure there is contact between the plug and the gauge cluster.
Had a bit of problems with my 68 too, found that the plug that goes into the gauge cluster, the little copper tabs were bent a little and I got no reading on my gauge, I think that when I took it out to paint it, I bent the tabs putting it back in.

i have run a ground wire right from the sending unit to the body in back of the tank

Remove sender from tank. Solder a piece of wire to the OUTSIDE of the sender-assembly. Replace sender. Attach other end of 'new' ground wire to any clean metal surface near the tank--a ring terminal, crimped on this end, and sheet-metal-screwed to grounded metal works nicely.**If sender is mounted with like 5 or 6 metal screws, a wire with a ring terminal underneath one of the screws and then other end to a good metal surface works as well.
