Newbie with a '64 C10
 

Hello, my name is Dan, and I purchased a 64 C10 a little south from me. The truck runs but needs a little work to get it road worthy. Its a 3 hour drive to pick it up, so I had a question: How long and wide is that truck? or a better question can be, would it fit in a 12' trailer? here's a pic and I appreciate any input, and plz b easy on me, Im so new to this!!!

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the new truck. Longbed will be 127" wheel base....so 12' trailer will be tight, but it should fit. Short beds were 115"

Welcome and congratulations! I got my '64 in May, and this site has or will get you most anything you'll need to know about your truck.

Thanks everyone! yeah well my plans are to drive it and make it my own while i drive it. I want to lower it, and after spending some time on this site, I think I will cut the coils first until I can get some more cash to do flipped spindles and C notching it and what not... but im pretty excited bout it.
Im leaving it patina rat rod, i kinda like it that way, it has some serious character in the back tailgate and bed. I dont have many pics yet but will soon when I pick it up.
The interior is minty, seat bench is in great shape and so is the dash and door panels. Excited bout that...
Perhaps Ill just clear coat it after a wash...dont know if i should give it a polish then matte-clear... still thinking bout it, lets see... here is a pic of the front... its all i got for now...thx everyone!

Welcome to the forum Dan :D

Congrats on the new purchase. It looks to be in fairly good condition. The only rust I see is the lower rear of the fender. And I don't see any big dents.

A 12' trailer is going to be tight. Also keep in mind that these trucks weigh about 4200 lbs. So the weight capacity of the trailer needs to be considered.

Yeah CaptainFab, only rust thru spot in on the lower driver's fender, no real major dents and wait till i get pics of the interior, its in awesome shape. Everything works on it. I cant wait till I pick it up hopefully in a few days.
First things first though; Lowering it..:metal: Then I'll fab metal replacement for the lower fender, blend paint.

I hope this trailer works out, cause if not its gonna be costly to tow it :(
The 12' trailer is double axle, but Ill get the correct load rating capacity checked out before making that move...

Thx Mudman, yeah Im on a serious budget right now, but I think cutting up the front springs and getting some Jeep coils for the rear is rather inexpensive route for now...

Ok so one final question regarding transport, since Im still sorting out my options... Will the C10 fit in UHAUL's 6x12' Auto Transport Rental?

I ask because since its open on the sides, front and back it gives more room than a trailer with side bars... Anyone done this before?? Im really trying to pick up this truck this weekend!!!

I'm not sure it will; at best, it will be extremely tight. I use a common 7'x16' (approx.; actually about 80" wide, IIRC) dovetail car hauler as of right now. It shouldn't be hard to find one to borrow, or you may check with other rental places.

FWIW, here's a poor picture of the aforementioned 7x16 trailer with a long wheelbase stepside on it.

They say 79.25" max width on the website, so it's not actually a 6' wide trailer, and it should go on.

I've moved mine on a UHaul auto transport a couple of times with no issues.

Been reading bout using Jeep springs to lower the rear, but I need clarification ( Newbie question) Is that Jeep REAR springs or front springs. I notice they are different, and Ive been reading how u cant cut certain springs cause of their shape. Sorry im sure this is simple but Im new to this...Im a VW guy and in old Vdubs we dont cut springs lol

Picked up the 64 yesterday, and Im stoked. It does look like they put a 350 in there, Ill get some pics soon... Its in my buddies house and its been raining here in Central Florida all day- what a surprise (right)
Anyhow, I also picked up some 17" Chevy steelies for it...
Gonna start working on it tomorrow when its dry outside :lol:

Good question! I think Im going for chocolate brown... I was thinking tan, but I dont know how good they will look with whitewalls. Last option, the classic gloss black!

Good answer, guess the truck color depends also, all you can do is try a color and if not then another. Let us know how it works out.

It got the tune up, new wires, cap n rotor, tranny oil, engine oil, nu water pump, upper and lower rad hoses, fuel filter!....this joker PURRRED like a wild cat when we turned the key!

I think Im gonna keep the patina look for now...truck OG color is dark blue, was resprayed that velvet green, which gives it a cool look... but Im not sure if Ill eventually take it down to the blue and satin clear coat it...or if I will just satin clear coat it as is....we'll see!

Tomorrow, I will cut rear and front springs...coil n half...but I got Jeep springs for the rear ( got the whole set front and back for $20 bucks!)
